Dual-class thief/fighter?

Post by Arkanjul »

Hey, I'm about to play BG2 for my second time around and I'm wanting to do a party like this...

Sorcerer (I love sorcerers)

Jaheira

And lastly I want to do another of my own characters as a dual classed swashbuckler/fighter. I really only want the swashbuckler for the finding/disarming traps and opening locked stuff, he will be dualed as a fighter as soon as I start the game. I was just wondering if, when the swashbuckler becomes active again, will this character be able to use his thieving abilities wearing metal armor that he will acquire as a fighter?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, there. :)

If you are to take only three players through the game, your swashbuckler will regain before reaching the end of the first dungeon.

However, I would make him/her multi-class rather than dual, especially if you have ToB expansion installed, to make most of the High Level Ability. As the three members party, even multi class will level up first enough. And no, he cannot use thieving ability wearing metal armour, as far as I can remember, unless you have ToB and reach certain level as thief to gain the Use Any Item ability.

Nah, don't multi. I was actually thinking of reinstalling for the purpose of playing this very character. I was gonna start off as a Swashy and put points into Find Traps and Pick Locks only and maybe some in Detect Illusion (does anyone know if this is really necessary?). I was gonna dual him after he got his second +1 to THAC0 and AC (I think level 10). And even then with a 3 man party you'll get it back quick. And instead of making your own Sorceror, try Kelsey. It's a very well balanced mod, and is one of few I'll actually use. And Thieves can never use thieving abilities while wearing anything above Studded Leather armour, just like Rangers can't Hide in Shadows with anything above Studded Leather.

Actually, you can detect traps (and illusions) even while wearing heavy armor, but you can't pick pocket, open locks or disarm traps.

You can also set traps while wearing heavy armour.

And you can wear Elven Chain Mail and still use the rest of the thief skills - although you will suffer a small penalty (5% to Locks and Traps, 10% to Move Silently).

Strange that there's no penalty to finding traps while wearing plate mail, yet there is while wearing elven chain! I think that's a bug in the game ... I think there's also supposed to be a bonus to your skills when you're not wearing any armour, but that doesn't seem to be implemented either.

no there is actually penalties to your thief abilities while wearing any sort of armour, ive seen the table with the exact details before but i cant remember where it was :p but im sure the heavier your armour is the more penalties you'll get, ie elf chain will receive more penalties than a shadow armour while shadow armour receives more penalities than ur standard leather armour. But i suppose it doesnt really matter later in the game as all ur thief skills will be well over 100.

Just remember, always take armour off when pick pocketing unless ur armour gives pick pocket bonus.

Yes, I've seen the table in the manual - but try it in the actual game. Take a look at your stats, with and without armour (with the exception of Elven Chain), and there's no change.

So unless they're applying the penalty/bonus when you actually go to use it, which would be rather difficult to determine ... but if that's the case, then why does Elven chain change the stats? And anything else that affects your thieving skills (Mercykiller ring, Boots of Stealth, etc) will change your stats.
