Are Korgan and/or Jan worth it?

Post by Aerith »

simple put, i have korgan and jan and I'm wondering if i should be wasting my time with them. I like korgan but i'm worried his evil nature will pose a problem later on. As for Jan i've heard you lose him later on. My main character is a kensai(later will dual-class to mage) but i need a thief and a mage and i've yet to get Edwin, should i keep and stick with Jan or hold out for someone else? Also, i have Anomen as my healer (instead of Jaheria cause i had her last time) should i take him or is there someone better?

Ok i am thinking this. Definitly keep Jan, he is the best theif you can have throught the entire game. I also have herd that some people loose him on his quest, but it never hapened to me. I had the ring of human influence, so maybe thats the difference, if it is, its easy to get, and thus looseing him shouldn't be a problem. He is also a pimp mage, and can function in a good, bad, or neutral alligned party. I'd also say Anmoen is a go. He can be a great fighter (crom frayer)as well as a healer, and has a couple very nice offensive spells. Finally Korgan. I have never used Korgan for a long duration, so I am far from an expert. From what i can tell, you have a good aligned party because you are worried about his evilness (a reason not to get Edwin, Catioc Evil). I'd say ditch Korgan and pick up Minc. Minc is the man.

Jan stuff all game? hmmmm, i'd say not. You can get a fantastic light crossbow from the silver dragon for completeing her quest. Also keep in mind that Jan can wear chain mail armor. Also, even though its far away, the balck dragon in Sulanessalar gives you some pimp chain mail, keep that in mind. Other then that, i'd say keep his gauntlets and other stuff, those things are off the hook.

Korgan is arguably the best fighter in the game and I find him entertaining to have around. Just don't plan to have a reputation over 18.

If you can put up with him, Anomen is far better than Jahiera as both a tank and priest. (Just make sure he passes his knight's test.) Viconia is a better Cleric than Anomen, but can't fight well or take much damage. If you have no need for more tanks, then you might want Viconia. Otherwise stick with Anomen.

Jan is a matter of personal preference. I sometimes use him early on but tend to ditch him before getting Imoen, because Imonen's thieving skills (while not as good as Jan's) are adequate and she's eventually a better mage. Of course, if you do all the Ch 2 quests before going to Spellhold, Imoen will be way behind in experience. If you don't want to use Imoen and your PC isn't a thief, you're stuck with Jan.

Edwin is unquestionably the best mage in the game and is himself worth keeping your reputation below 19.

Be aware some groupings--e.g. Edwin with Minsc--eventually cause hostile interactions. These are listed in the gamebanshee NPC pages...

Korgan will cause problems for a good-aligned party, as will Edwin, though they're both fun to have for the short term. Jan is one of the best thieves in the game, as well as a decent mage, and very funny, too. I always take him if I'm not playing a thief.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

You might also want to try Mazzy or Valygar. They are both good archers and if you beef them up with strength modifiers they make respectable secondary fighters.
And yes, Anomen is an excellent cleric/fighter, if you can put up with his arrogence.
