the trouble with monks

Post by Jon-e-boy »

anybody who plays pen and paper add and is familiar with 3rd addition knows that the monk class can be avery formidable oponent and is one of the more dangerous classes. The trouble is that many of there better abilities haver not been implemented into the game to to the fact that its core rules revolove around second edition and that they may have no relevancy in the game, for example he monks ability to fall great distances wiyhout damage is great but it doesnt fit into bg2 and that when the monk reaches level 20 the first 20 damage dealt to him by normal weapons is instantlye regenrated, the immuniy to poisons, the whole package is great but bg2 just doesnt have what it takes to fully take advantage of the monk, from what ive seen nwn wont be too different in the sense that there probably will not be any gaping holes the pcs are forced to jump down and the chances that theyll implement the level 20 ability are slim to none, but anyway the monk does not live up to its full AD&D glory in bg2

Yep, you're right...
Still, the monk is pretty good in bg2 :P
Notice that a lot of the monk abilities have to do with skills. Heh... there is no need for SKILLS in bg2 (hack, slash, talk to Jaheira, hack, slash, talk to Jaheira etc)therefore the monk isn't that powerful.
Besides, who needs to climb walls and jump distances when you're off on the road to ascending the Throne of Bhaal? Image Image

Monk isn't only one lacking pnp abilities. See druid, for example, esp. over level 14 (with exp.cap removed).

Monks do get immunity to normal weapons at level 20 in bg2.

Heh. I have to say this is the first post I've ever seen with someone saying the monk should be stronger than it is.

As far as the points your're talking about here:
1) Jumping down: This isn't implemented as it is never needed
2) Damage from normal weapons: This is in the game though it is treated as immunity, which is actually slightly better.
3) Immunity to Poision: Yes, this is in the game. Though in the game immunity to poison is not the same as Resistance to Poison 100%. It keeps the monk from taking damage from being poisoned but does not stop damage of type "poison" like cloud kill.

Besides these, look at what the monk does get: Magic Resistance, powerful unarmed attacks, Fast Movement, Stealth, Trap Detection, immunity to charm, immunity to disease, immunity to slow...maybe something else I missed.

I just solo'd the game in 9 days, 19 hours with a monk. They're as good as anything else out there. In fact, many people consider them too good.

BTW, in fact immunity from normal weapon is not a bonus, because monk gets it when there is almost none of such weapon (i do not count some occasional orcs, they anyway might be done with hands even tied behind). There is almost none of non-magical weapon even in whole game save Ch.1.

Not to disagree by any means L but my solo sorc used prot from Normal weapons alot in the beginning of the game, IE (copper coronet, sewers (under cc), Moving between cities (thieves), Maevars guild, the guys in druid grove (not the one with gnasher), the folks burning vironica, hostile enemies in the bridge (fallen paladins also), and many more places. Prior to this i also thought this was a worthless spell, however there are a lot of enemies that use regular weapons around town. Later on of course you dont need such a spell. But it helps when you solo and need some extra time.

I soloed a monk and I thought that immunity to normal weapons was great. In any way the fact that many monsters have weapons considered magical has nothing to do with monks or how they have been implemented.
