Vhailor's Helm?

Post by Savarius »

During the course of playing BG2, one doesn't often use every single item in the game. I've been soloing a beastmaster, and wanted the helm so I could have a little backup in melee. But my elven beastmaster keeps saving against the effects of the spell, and simulacrum isn't supposed to have a saving throw.

Has anyone else experienced this? Can it be fixed with IEEP? I'm planning on soloing a wizard slayer sometime, and I'll want the helm then too. This sort of sucks.

Yeah, I had that same thing happen on my first run through of the game. I gave the Helm to Aerie (who, at the time, had more spells than my conjurer, and it was a good-aligned party). She kept saving on throws to cast, until I gave up in disgust. I haven't tried this since the patch came out, so I have no idea if it's been fixed.

Yes, they have to actually FAIL their saves to cast a Simulacrum...

Let me get this straight: if you were to cast the spell "simulacrum" or use a scroll, you wouldn't have a saving throw, but when you cast the same spell, and is the same spell, from Vhailor's Helm, you do?

If that's the case, then all Vhailor's Helm is is a +1 helm. Both the Helm of Glory and the Helm of Balduran are better if Vhailor's is completely unreliable.

I think the patch must have fixed that coz ive got Aerie using it with no problems in my party at the moment and its so useful...
the Skull of death is the one i cant figure out though, it doesnt seem to do anything.

Kopywrite, thanks for passing that along. I'll have to try it next time I reinstall the game. (I've got Edwin in my saved party, this time. A Simulacrum'd Edwin? Muwa-HAHAHAHA...!)

Yeah, Savarius. The spell is (maybe, was) cast by the helm as though it were being cast by an unfriendly source. Rather reminds me of some joke items we deliberately made when I was GMing in DragonRealms (and were sold with hints of their status). One cast a spell that stunned--only it was on a necklace, not in a wand. Image

Ha ha! IEEP is so handy for these sorts of situations. The actual spell has no saving throw, but the item effect that casts the spell does (save vs. death/poison). A simple bug that the folks at home can fix for themselves.
