I just boght the game - looks great. I'd like to be able to make my own party, but my question is this - having played a bit in the single player mode, it seems that a fair amount of narrative (quest triggers?) relate to the NPC's. If I fill a party up, or even come close, Imoen et al wont be with me.
I assume you can get through the game without them, but my question is how much of the game Ill miss without NPC's?
any thoughts would be appreciated.

Multi v. Single Player
you will miss out on quiete a number of quests and interesting dioalogues. You will also miss out on romances. Personaly, when I started playing with no NPC's I got bored and restarted from the beggining. I would suggest you use NPC's.

Playing with NPC's is a lot more fun. Some of them had me ROFLMAO.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

If it's your first game, make a single player game......multi is for when you've played a lot of times.....

I think that playing without NPCs is very boring.
Hmm.. I think that the most improved thing in BG2 are NPCs interactions (dialogues between them, their quests and finally romances). There are less NPCs than in BG1 but they are more much interesting - they have deeper characters, more individual stories that sometimes affect our play (e.g. the Jaheira's or Jan Jansen's past)
Soloing or playing your own characters party in multiplayer could be interesting when you will know the whole story.

When I played for the first time, I played a multiplayer with two of my own players and switched up many of the different NPC's throughout the second chapter in the remaining 4 slots. I did everything I possibly could, and then went to spellhold. When I got there, I removed everyone, and played with five of my own and Imoen. Your PC, and other created characters will almost always be more poweful than the NPC's, but you don't want to miss out on their quests and interesting story lines.

u see, it was quite "frightening" and a lil bit "boring" until minsc saw irenicus and screamed
"evil meet sword. SWOORD MEEET EEEEEEVIL"
i was laughing my ass off and got the excitement spark i needed..
what i m trying to say is u indeed need the npcs to "get the max outta bg2"
