I cant use familiars, what do i do wrong?
It says only protagonists can use it, does that mean Edwin never can?
Familiars
Familiars
Sigurd, Crazed Cleric of Talos, Servant of Evil.
Only YOU can summon a familiar, means your character has to mage/sorc/bard or anything else that is able to cast spells...

You can only have a familiar if your protagonist is a mage, single, dual or multi-class. I think I might have seen some hack that allows you to have a familiar even if your protagonist is of another class, but I don't remember where. Also, I have found descriptions of how to get around this problem by exporting/importing characters between games, but I never got it working. Sorry! I can post the description if you like to try, though.

Not technically correct. The BeastMaster is given the innate ability to find familiar. Do it immediatly for an extra 12 or so HP's then store the familiar in your backpack.Originally posted by C Elegans:

Word.
The beastmaster? Innate ability? Damn, I thought I had tried every way of getting a familiar without having to have a mage or bard protagonist. I played through the game sadly missing a familiar. Two, how is one supposed to know about this? I read both the manual and several gameFAQs about classes and never found this.

It is most assuredly true, I did it just last week. My BeastMaster has a fairy dragon. There is a lot that is not documented about the BeastMaster (in the written manual, at least), like the fact he can't wear metal armor at all. I discovered this while playing. Or that he CAN use a scimitar, but not get a proficiency in it. Go figure.Originally posted by C Elegans:

Any class who can read scroll "Find Familiar" can have it. Paladin cannot because it is not permited to place scrol in quick item slot, druid too. Sorcerer can, even if he does not know the spell but have scroll instead.
Do not know about innate, though.
Best wishes,
L.

You can also do the "potion-casting" technique. Pause the game, move a potion into a slot in your inventory (not a quick spot). Click on the potion and drink. Then before leaving the inventory screen, replace the potion with the scroll (find familiar in this case). When you return to the game and unpause, you cast the spell rather than drink the potion. This works for any character, and gives you the bonus HP, whereas I think when you do the trick using multi- and single player, you get the familiar without the HPs.

Anyway it goes only for mages. Paladin, for example, isn't permited even place the scroll in the slot - "Could not use the item!" Or maybe after a potion it is permited?
SORRY! I had missed the idea! Great! Though first time i see spell cast from backpack !
TIA,
L.
