If you have downloaded the lvl. 50 rules together with the cap remover your thac0 and the rest will improve as it should.
Now that they'll release ToB I suddenly don't know if the cap remover was such a good idea at all.
As for the skill points, that's hard since you have only so few to distribute. As an assassin you should have your stealth abilties maxed out. On the other hand you'll also need to pick locks and remove traps if you don't have another thief or a mage, and there is a lot of stuff that improves your stealth in the game.

"Everybody wants to see justice done, to somebody else."
For a solo assassin:
Start with a halfling to get the thieving skill bonuses. Every little bit counts with an assassin, esp. if he/she is solo.
Stats:
Str: 17.....Int: 10 minimum
Dex: 19.....Wis: 10 minimum
Con: 16.....Cha: 8 minimum
Skills: Put about 80 in lockpicking and trap-finding to start. Divide the rest between Move Silently and Hide-in-Shadows.
Proficiencies: Put a star in Short Sword or Katanna, Quarterstaff, Short Bow, and Single-Weapon Style. Why quarterstaff, you ask? Because thieves can backstab with it, there's a magical one available in the first dungeon, and there's a +4 staff available as soon as you can afford it, not to mention the Staff of Striking (considered a +3).
As you level up, concentrate on boosting your stealth. Take advantage of the fact you get a THACO bonus when striking from the shadows. Get the bow as soon as possible, and poison your arrows. You will need to rest several times, if only to re-charge your poison ability.
Once out of the dungeon, work on getting lockpicking and trap-finding to 95, and Hide-in-Shadows and Move Silently over 100. Next, work on trap-setting. Save up money for the Girdle of Stone Giant Strength.
I started a solo-halfing assassin to see how it was done, and took him through Irenicus's dungeon in 3 days. (I could have gone through faster, but I decided that the ogre, the Otyugh, the Cambion, Frenedan, and all the Duegar and Memphits had to die. Those potions of speed came in handy!)

There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Go with whatever race and character stats you want. Sure, being a halfling or elf could make it a bit easier at first due to their bonuses. Easier does not equal more fun. Make a character you like.
I like to put most of my skill points in picking locks and stealth first. I then go after setting traps. I don't worry much about finding and removing traps till later in the game since you hit fewer of them as a solo player (and I now know where most of the major traps are).
The only problem I ran into was that assassins had no protection from the level drain effects of vampires. That meant I spent a lot of time in Bodhi's lair either resting to recharge daystar or returning to the city to hit the local temple for restorations.
Just remember to work toward your strengths. That means possibly backstabbing and running around a corner (where you have traps waiting) so you can hide in shadows only to backstab them again.

Doh!!! LOL! I'm an idiot! Sometimes the easiest solutions are right under my nose. I should have just said, "I didn't want to use no stinkin' scrolls", but the truth is it never occurred to me. Thank you!Originally posted by Sojourner:

Something that I don't think anyone has mentioned is the detect illusions skill. If your a solo assassin, your gonna want to be able to detect illusions that the countless mages pull off.
Once you reach 100 in stealth skills and 100 in lockpick and detect traps, start working on detect illusions. Once this reaches 100, then start on traps skill.
Mercykiller ring comes in handy too. 20 bonus to stealth and lay traps. Save the other ring slot for ring of Gaxx.
Quick question, but can thieves use the amulet of power? The one that protects from level drain? I can't honestly remember...

Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

Vehemence,
Only clerics and mages may use the Amulet of Power.
The problem with DI (Detect Illusion), and why it's not recommended for a solo assassin:
It has been my experience that you need to allocate 120-150 points to DI before it begins to function like True Sight. Thieves generally start with 0 points in DI. Assassins gain only 15 points per level. An assassin would have to level up many times before DI became really useful.
An assassin is not a fighter. His greatest strength lies in stealth and back-stabbing. If a mage is going to cause a headache, sneak past him. A solo assassin does not need to fight every battle in the game.
Instead of putting all those points in DI, put them into trap-setting. Traps will prove to be a life-saver at several points in the game. And they will help you defeat Kangaax

In my experience, 100 points is all that is required and you will be able to remove all illusionary spells. Once I reached 100, it didn't fail to reveal anyone or remove illusions.Originally posted by Sojourner:

But I do take your point, and perhaps traps would be a viable alternative. I however haven't really used traps that often in my games.
As far as not fighting every fight... actually, I found that my assassin did fight every fight. If a mage is proving to be a hassle... try harder. I don't think I let anyone slip by Except the odd golem here or there... those guys were a nightmare!

This is where traps are sooo nice... Get the golems to chase you over them, and it's bye-bye golems. I've even killed Adamantite golems with traps alone.Originally posted by Vehemence:
