Most Powerful Spellcaster
Most Powerful Spellcaster
I just finished BGII as a goody two-shoe Kensai. Now I'm ready to be an evil mage. But is a mage more powerful than a sorcerer and cleric. If so what type of mage? My guess is necromancer. Who is the baddest spellcaster around?
If you want the most powerful spellcaster then your choice should be Sorcerer (faster spell casting)
The mage is good if you want to play with the party. The same thing is about cleric that has much more spells slots (depending on wisdom) than ordinal mage.
I like two types of mages : Ilusionist or Necromancer (they are from opposite schools but I thing that they could have the most interesting selection of spells)

Sorcerer with good spell selection, 18+ INT possible high WIS. Hard at start, overpowerful soon. What could withstand if in stream 3-4 fireballs and 2-3 clodkills are cast? Only note that the selection must be carefully considered and match the playing style. Level 10 already is powerful enough, and after 11 (+ one spell for all levels save 1 at once) ... The other side, you can choose spells scrolls are rare, random or none for. Note, you may also cast from scrolls still.

My vote would go to a Human Conjurer (I'm not a big fan of their opposite school Divination anyway) with 18 Dex, 18 Int, 16+ Wis. He would be even better if he was an elf, but unfortunately Elven Conjurers are not allowed
A high Wisdom I think is a must for a good spellcaster. Lore bonus, Magic Defense adjustments AND will have more success at casting Limited Wish successfully. Nothing worse than having one of those beauty scrolls backfire on you...
My 2 cents,
ElvenKing

If you're going to play evil and want the most powerful mage, than you must play...
Edwin. Sorry, but the most powerful mage available to you isn't someone you can create at all, but a Red Mage you can employ.
And since he's a specialist mage, assuming you want to add him to your party, I suggest creating a personal sorcerer.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
sorcerer all the way, you don't have to get your a$$ whipped, reload, and rest to memorize different spells appropiate for that specific battle. there is somethign comforting abotu having 6 mordenkain's swordsby your side. but be very careful in yoru selection of spells...it takes a lot of thought in advance.
I would be a serial killer if i didn't have such a strong distaste for manual labor
The most powerful character is definitely the sorcerer, but let me recommend a conjurer dualed to cleric at level 10. The cleric part could reach level 20 (with xp cap) and became very potent, especially if you play evil and turn undead. This class has the largest number of spell slots, good in solo and an excellent support in party (though a bug prevents to regain the extra spells of the specialist, so you have to shadowkeep them back.)
