I believe you can, as there are other NPCs I have healed in the game. Be aware that if your familiar dies, you loose a constitution point. (Something I never knew until I had 1 Con. point)

keep your familiar in your backpack, that way it never gets killed

Agreed: Although an occasional mass invis can be useful, the best thing about the familiar is the extra hp it gives my mage.
Just keep it in your backpack where it's safe.
Incidently, as a mage go ahead and learn the spell since you get 1000 exp for doing so. As a sorcerer just use a scroll.
