GEMS???

What in the world are all these gems for? I have at least 100 or more. I have 3 bags FULL of gems most are dubs or triples. i have YET to use a single one and im in the asylum right now. Can someone tell me when and where to use these dang gems?

Alright cause i have a Emerald and Several other what seem to be rare gems that sell for alot but seem to do nothing. What about these named necklaces? I have one that sells for 1800g but im not sure if its used for a quest and it has a rare name weird colors but no stats. And it wasnt given by anyone, it was actually found in a coffin.
