When NCP's die
Can you get them back? Misc and massy have both died because of those damn vampires. What kills them other than the mace of disruption and daystar? I'm just started chapter 3 and every time I come out of the Shadow Theives guildhall they attack me and they always kill Misc and Boo. It's really pissing me off.

flame spells seem to work pretty well
i'm not sure of the name but there is a 4th lv cleric spell that protects from energy drain.
(actuall think it's called protection from energy drain)
lesser restoration always pays off big for me, if you have been drained.

that happens especially when facing beholders, since the characters can be turned to stone, and then once they are hit they are gone forever. but also, as soon as they are turned to stone, their picture disappears from the side, and you have to turn them to flesh and talk to them again to get them to rejoin your party
I would be a serial killer if i didn't have such a strong distaste for manual labor

If you've just started Ch.3 and you're with the Shadow Thieves, that means Aran gave you an Amulet of Power (the Amulet of Power IIRC there's only one) - one of its features is it protects from level drain. If you're using Minsc to tank against the vampires give him the amulet and try to keep the rest of your party in the backline.
A better tactic is Neg. Plane Protection but you probably don't have that memorized at the moment so I suggest the above to get out of the guild and then go to an inn (the Docks only has the Sea's Bounty tavern). Once there I suggest doing a save and taking a break to read up on vampire strategies.
If you can't get away without losing a party member there's a temple on the same horizontal line as the guild, next to Valygar's house. A Raise Dead is worth about 1000gp. Also handy is Restoration (about 700gp?) for anyone who got level-drained, although it's even better if one of your Clerics has it (4th level spell).
My personal preference is to buff-up my tanks and send them in against vampires, and use Neg. Plane Prot. on my spellcasters, then use Restoration on the level-drained characters after the fight. NPP just doesn't last long enough to the point where it's hardly worth casting IMO, and protecting the spellcasters is a higher priority because they lose their memorized spells (which is very annoying). You can't Restore yourself if you've lost the spell or the ability to cast it.

I don't think that straight fighters can use the Amulet of Power for protection against level drain. The spell "negative plane protection" does protect against level drain temporarily and magically, but why not just go into a berserker rage which will accomplish the same thing? And of course, there's Sanctuary/Turn Undead or Sanctuary/Blade Barrier, and there's Spirit Armor X4--cleric or paladin anyone? Finally, fire spells should do plenty of damage, as well "False Dawn."

A character's picture will vanish if they're subjected to Maze, but that doesn't mean they're gone for good. On the other hand, if a character is actually killed in battle and their picture vanishes, they can't be resurrected.
False Dawn is a really good spell to use in the presence of the undead. A couple of those, and you should be able to kill all vampires in your vicinity.
When you get a Resurrection wand, be sure to sell it to a merchant and buy it back, fully charged. They hold ten charges at a time.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
The earliest place you can find a rod of resurrection in Chapter 3 (at least for me) is at Mekrath's Lair where you go rescue Haer Dalis.
If you have that rod, just cast it on the greyed pictures of your NPCs and they're back for action in full health. It's much better than other resurrection spells.
As for spell to strike out the undead, use fireball, lightning bolt, holy smite, false dawn, anything that has light and fire.
Weapons to kill them would be Daystar (below the Crooked Crane at the City Gates), and the Mace of Disruption +2 (upgraded by Ilithium Ore) can be used by Minsc and will make him immune to level drain.
Hope it helps.

Also, Purchase Azure Edge Axe from the copper coronet. Although it does not protect form level drain, it is a ranged weapon (Throwing Axe with returns to user afterwards) and Undead need to save at -4 or be slain. A vampire cannot drain you to death if he is dead before he reachs you. You can also set it to melee like most weapons, and is great if you have protection spells vs level drain. protection vs undead scrolls do that nicely too.
