Crash After Crash----prisons

Post by GEEZER »

Boy, I think I just found a major bug in this here game! Room 4 in the Prisons is supposed to have the best weapon in the game(?) so, naturally I would like to get at it, right? Been working this challenge for about 6 hours all together, no luck. My rogue can get through the 2 gates, no problem, but as soon as the party moves forward, you get one undead appearing down by the coffin, so you go after him with an eye on getting the "fabulous" DRAEDSWORD DEAMONIC (their spelling, not mine!), but, behind your back a whole crowd of Mohrgs(10), 2 Liches and an Archlich are gathering outside the gates. The first time, a couple of Mohrgs got inside, and then 2 more, and things went to rat**** very fast! I know defeat when it's looking me in the eye, so I tried to load a saved game that would put me back just inside the gates. Worked fine until I clicked on the message that tells you "The inscription here has been blotted out....etc etc" and then the screen is blotted out as the game crashes! I had 2 other saved games, one just outside the closed gates, and another inside when I was interupted for something or other. I tried restarting each one and got the same thing happening as on the first one! And each time I think it was because of that damn message which had no business being there in the first place! Like, it wasn't on the screen when I saved, cause everything is frozen until you get rid the messages, right? Is there a patch for this?

I'm back! Was running out of space and wasn't sure if that space would automatically expand?? Anyhow, I went back to a fourth saved game that was down and arround the corner from room 4, came back, opened the 2 gates and started the battle! I'd got rid of 3 Mohrgs and a Litch when the game crashed again! Tried 2 more times and gave up as a bad job, for now...Has anybody else run into this particular bug??

I don't think it's ever crashed there for me, but with all of the enemies running about, and that greenish circle mist stuff that spreads out from the crypt in pulses, it really slows things down alot. Try turning off music and sound, take the fight outside of that room if you can, away from that crypt spewing stuff and kill, kill, kill
hold undead, chain lightening are your friends in this battle
that's the best I can say

OK, when I get backl to that room, I'll put your suggestions into effect on sound and music but those Mohrgs are hard to fight out in the open. Will try w/o s&m first... keep you posted...

try casting freedom of movement on your party, to prevent being paralyzed, there is some item that has some charges of this spell, don't remember what it is though
use shield of faith, protection from evil, bless and prayer to beef up your defenses, and cast haste if you have it on your best characters for extra attacks

Have had the same problem. Saved games crash when approaching the gate. Saved after defeating the Revenant inside, and before the other groups of Lich & Mohrgs arrived. When I reloaded, the message about"Rune writ in ever fresh blood" popped up again - with the whole party outside. When spacebar hit, screen freezes, then crashes.

It's really got me beat. Or is this just normal??

Sorry to hear about your problem, but glad someone else has it besides myself! Bare with me but could you explain your comment about the "spacebar"? Is that what you call the message??
I'm at the end of the game, now, but am seriously thinking of going back to Room 4 to try and get that Dreadsword Deomonic (my spelling) 'cause I think I'm going to need it!!

You dont need it honestly you can get past the end without it, i did because my rogue couldnt open the door, but its a great novelty item.

What patch version are you guys running? because if its not 1.4 then thats why. Check the pinned topic on the top of the forums for information.

Baldric269-I did go back after posting, and I got it! I dont know what worked in my favor, the fact that I haven't tried since the middle of July (which means that my crew is a heck of a lot stronger since then) or my different approach. Instead of everybody going all the way into the second section, where the sarcophicus is, I stopped just inside the first gate and sent my rogue(the weakest) in to make contact. As soon as he did, the rest of the enemy showed up outside. Mopping them up was fairly straight forward. The main observation I made was that neither the first time approaching the front gate, nor the second time going in to get the sword, did that damn message show up!! Go figure, ay? Maybe that was the source of the bug???
Volk-I'm not running any of the patches! Every time I try to d/l 1.4 everthing seems to go ok until I try to find it to integrate it with the game(as I've done successfully with many other games) I can't. Must be doing something wrong?? Whatever, this room 4 was the only serious problem that I've run into so I'm not complaining....Btw, if you want to open those gates, just have one of your fighters whack them with his best weapon and, voila!!

I havent played PoR since i finished it last summer needless to say is i loved the game but once i finished it some of the things left out of the game started to bother me and i didnt play it anymore.

There no bards/druids/wizards or epic level things, and the rules are botched up too, and that was a huge let down for me and it wasnt realy an RPG it was mostly a hack and slash, it had it own good things but i never played through the game more then two times one party and one solo which i got through last summer.

98 compatability mode worked for me

I couldn't load the game when I was near that field affect at room 4 of the prisons level. I was getting Engine Executable ..... something error. The game would load, actually, but it crashed right away. I changed compatablity to 98(using XP here), just right click mouse context, on the menu link, and changed that in the properties, and it loaded without issue.

Thanks all.

Pool of Radiance:RoMD

I have the same problem here to. I have the book. The place in question is on page 217, location 19 and 20 of the map. I think the problem might be solved by installing the sound card the game requires, (3D sound card). If I'm not mistaken, sound and music take up a LOT of memory. I don't have this sound card just yet so I have bypassed this area until I get one. The fight to the north of this area is just about as big. Locations 21 through 27.

With me, a similar problem turned out not to be the room or its contents at all, but a glitch involving the archlich and his shadowy minions which blocked the path. The solution was to not destroy the lich's phylactery until after the sword was safely in hand (even though this may mean fighting your way past them multiple times). I hope this helps.
