Wizard!

Post by silent_assassin »

Greetings all!

During the awfully cloudy beginning of the summer here in Sweden, I decided to play thru Neverwinter Nights once more, for better or for worse, you never now with this game. So, I decided to play a class that I NEVER played before. Since I´m ususally a melee character the choice fell on the Wizard. And after playing a good bit into chapter 2 I can say this; Wizards rule! But that's not why I post this. As many others here, I'm in need of help, or more like it, I'm in need of advice. I really don't now any good wizard equipment. I have the battle mage robe and the "Staff of Meldanen", but apart from those I'm pretty much unarmed and unprotected(With the exeption of dear Daelan of course). So, my question: Where can I find any good wiz equipment? Staffs, robes, rings, everything will be welcome! And lastly, I'm a Necromancer(thinking of turning him into a Pale Master in HotU)

Cheers!

Well - the only equipment I ever recommend is the Greater Belts of Brawler/Swordman/Archer. They come in really handy if you change amongst them depending one your enemys damage.

Besides these - I rarely pay that much attention to equipment (I never plan character equipment), but usually wears what I find or buy along the way that I find usefull.

I wouldnt worry too much about yout equipment if your getting hit a lot be sure to cast mage armor and stoneskin, they have huge durations and prove handy in stoping anything that comes your way, especialy stoneskin.

You've got a good point there, Volk. But I'm not afraid to be hit or caught in melee, I've got a few tricks for that... I was merely wondering if I have missed a "Staff of the Magic" or someting on the way to chapter 2. :D Just a little exaggeration there...

But thanks anyway, Volk and Xandax! I'll just keep going and se what happends. I know that I can get a "Staff of Power" from Eltoora's lab i any case. I'll just have to be patient.

Cheers!

I got lucky and found a staff of defense late act 1 or early act 2 and i used that untill i could forge a good one with the Imaskaran tomes, i remeber using a robe of light because i was getting tired of looking the robe of fire resistance i got from the the prologue, i sold Maldenens staff when i found the defense one, but truely that staff is one of the best and it gets bonus points for looking cool.

Once i made the staff of power i didnt switch it untill the end, got lucky and found the robes of vecna in a chest though, otherwise the mages battle robes are your best option in terms of armor, the grater ones are especialy good for the 14 SR and skill bonuses.

Spoilers from act 2 below highlight to read.

The witch you find in the deep woods after you accept the druids quest should drop a regular staff of power or some sort of staff as well, so after you talk to her and give her the mirror back kill her for a good chunk of exp a robe and her staff

*sigh* I am just a fighter at heart, I guess - my little gnome is usually sporting a crossbow to plink away at the wimpy enemies not deserving of true mage deaths, or to start shooting at doors, then sic Daelan at my "enemy" so that he is in the front when the door collapses, not me :) .

With Boots of Speed (thank you, thank you Valeron!), the Crossbow of Affliction (my only great drops so far), and an extra Bull's Strength on him, he can almost do a tiny bit of damage, too. Go go paralyzing bolts, for fun :) .

Other than that - I bet I could pave the road from Neverwinter to Luskan with Shimmering Belts, I have seen so many of the dern things...

The Elemental Resistance ring coupled with the regen from Boddynock's ring (a sorc here, not wiz) means that I can just trip floor traps, not stop and try to do something clever (eventually, there are better rings with regen). Personally, I love good saving throws, so bump it wherever I can - Cloak of Fortification, Thayvian circlet, scarab of protection. I even wore the Boots of Reflex +3 (quest from someone in Act 1) until getting the speedy boots to improve a weak spot on wizards.

I tend to play situationally, so I am changing stuff regularly depending on where I am - i.e.: the Thayvian circlet is swapped out for the Golden Circlet sometimes, or the Mask of Persuasion.

Boots of speed > AC boosting items > Save boosting items

I find that as a mage, I am in the line of attack rarely enough that attempting to raise AC is pretty worthless, and even with AC-enhancing items, mine is so bad as to make little difference. Archers are my only annoying sore spot - and the greater archer's belt would be pretty much proof against attacks, but I am pretty comfortable leaving that slot for other items, and using stoneskin instead of AC-enhancements. A mage's weak spot is spell/effects with reflex saves, and Area Effect spells/abilities that bypass his arcane defenses easily - not surprisingly, those usually require reflex saves as well :) .

I imagine that if you play a soloing mage with no "front liner" summoned beasts or familiars, that you would need to concentrate on Armor Class - but I figure that that's a particularly inefficient area to effect for me, who uses damage-taking classes in that role. In many respects, (IMO, of course), NwN follows the traditional MMORPG mindset for non-melee classes where Mana/Spellcasting bonuses > Resists > HPs > AC-enhancing items.

AC > Saves because of items with Immunity: Death Magic + Energy Buffer.

@Hero: Do you even have any Haste items?

EDIT: Sorry Xandax, removed.

Two mass hastes is a waste of two rounds and two level six slots (or seven if extended). Save time and spells: get boots of speed!
