Problem with wizard spell memorization

I was hoping someone could help me with a small problem I am having.

When I go to the spell mem screen for my wizard , there is a gold field under the empty spell slots. I can't seem to place a spell in that particular slot unless the spell is also gold. I have no idea why a spell is gold or not and why this particular field is there.

Btw, I have the official patch 2 and the Cof8 v3.0.3 installed if that makes any dofference. Thanks very much.

Does you wizard specialize in a certain spell school (Evocation, Illusion, Conjuration, etc.)? If so, then possibly try to put a spell from that school into that slot. If that doesn't work, we'll still find a solution, don't you worry.

Awesome Galuf! That explains it totally. I wasn't aware that I had to put a spell from the specialized scholl in the extra slot - must be a 3.5 rule . Thanks again.
