Int Stat to IQ Comparison

Post by Nighthawk »

This is more a D&D that BG specific question but should be of interest. Ever wonder just what those Int Stat numbers mean? This might give you a better idea...

...both Int Stats and IQ are normal distributions used to determine relative intelligence so we should be able to compare them using the Mean (Average) and Std Deviation.

Mean IQ: 100
Std Dev: 15

Mean 3d6: 10.5
Std Dev: ~2.96

Putting this together gives the IQ equivalents:
Stat/IQ
3 62
4 67
5 72
6 77
7 82
8 87
9 92
10 98
11 103
12 108
13 113
14 118
15 123
16 128
17 133
18 138
19 143
20 148
...
25 173
...
27 184
...
31 204

Anyone care to try figuring out results for the other stats? Str and Con you might be able to get out of physical fitness results. Cha and Wis are pretty hard to quantify.

Nah, you can't do it like that. Image
Since the IQ chart is defined as this:
30 and below: Imbecil
100: Avarage
140 and above: Brilliant
200: Absolute top.

In AD&D the humans possible score ranges from 3-18 (without use of magic) and 19+ are godlike intelligence.
So, my chart would look something like this:
19+ - Out of reach for humans
18 - 200 (Get a life)
17 - 185
16 - 170
15 - 155
14 - 140 (Brilliant)
13 - 130
12 - 120
11 - 110
10 - 100 (Average)
9 - 90
8 - 80
7 - 70
6 - 60
5 - 50
4 - 40
3 - 30 (Imbecil)

First I would like to point out the following table is a REGISTERED TRADE MARK of TSR. Which means, I'm doing a very illegal and dangerous thing posting it here, and this will be my last post as Wizards of the Coast mercenaries trace down my IP, pin down my location and assassin me.

According to the Monsters Manual:
0 Nonintelligent or not ratable
1 Animal intelligence
2-4 Semi-intelligent
5-7 Low intelligence
8-10 Average (human) intelligence
11-12 Very intelligent
13-14 Highly intelligent
15-16 Exceptionally intelligent
17-18 Genius
19-20 Supra-genius
21+ Godlike intelligence

In my opinion, the IQ values themselves aren't very important, but feel free to address the right numerical value to each label.

Moratz: Your suggestion would result in 1/200 people in the D&D multiverse with IQ's around 200 compared to about 1/billion RL. Exceptional characters (Elminster) have Int's above 18 just like exceptional people(Einstein) have IQ's approaching 200. It breaks down a bit at the extremes partly because there isn't such a thing as 18/00 Int, but a person with IQ 138 is just as exceptional relative the general population as a character with Int 18. At the other end, you are suggesting that about 10% of the population (Int 6) would have IQ's of 60 or lower while it is less than 0.5%.

EarcarAxe: This makes a bit more sense to me. Clearly IQ 1-2 is sub-human since no character can actually roll it. This would be your Imbeciles (IQ 30) who are incapable of feeding themselves. Still, at the upper end, Int 17 is much less unusual than a genius (IQ 150+).

Of course, maybe I'm just trying to build the case that if I were converted to D&D stats I would have IQ and Dex of 18 Image Image Image

None of this is relevant to BG2. Please take it to the Roleplaying category, from the main forum page. Thanks. This topic is closed.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
