Jan the turnip peddler

Post by Valmont »

I just accepted Jan Janssen in my party, to be the thief and a back-up mage. In the end, I want my party to be the following:

Me (Inquisitor)
Anomen
Jaheira
Viconia (love-interest)
Edwin
Jan

But, I also want to do the Yoshimo-quest, so, I kinda plan to trade in Jan for the bounty-hunter. When I pick up Imoen afterwards, would it be better to hang on to her instead of the gnomish bloke? And in case of the former, should I rush to get Imoen asap? But will I survive the Underdark then?

Thanks for your insights!

Jan has the best banter and character in the game. He will interact well with Edwin and Anomen. Imoen and Yosh blow.

Imoen will be a slightly better mage than jan, but you have edwin who has so many spells it's untrue.

jan is a waaaaay better theif than Imoen, but if you're only looking to find traps and unlock stuff, imoen will do that just fine.

jan's banter is hilarious.

your choice :) happy gaming

You could just drop Anomen and take both Jan and Imoen...

You already have fighters and healers. Jaheira and your PC can take the melee, while Edwin, Jan, Imoen and Viconia will cast at rear.

Viconia can be a really nice melee character if you use the right spells :)

Jaheira isn't much of a fighter though ;)

Excuse me??? At higher levels, Jaheira is nigh unstoppable in melee.

If by "not much of a fighter" you mean "quite possibly the best fighter in the later stages of the game", you are correct.

If not, however, you might wish to actually let Jaheira join your party. While I, personally, can't stand her character, I have to admit to her melee prowess.
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

indeed. when that woman gets level 5 spells, she becomes like an amazon on prozac.

but getting her better weapons is a *****. they all in hard to reach places. like the itch in the middle of my back.

Viconia also, with strength belt, holy power/champion's strength, DUHM and righteous magic can do some tankage of her own.

You can find some decent clubs and scimitars for Jaheira in chapter 2 (Belm, Gnasher, Blackblood etc), just look in Trademeet.

ay, i know but it requires going all the way to trademeet.

and if you go through trademeet just doing the druid grove quests and the rakshasa quests you don't get the scimitar which makes her an awesome dual weilder - belm.

the only +4 scimitar is in underdark, there are no +3 scimitars, the best spear is in underdark. in fact, the best weapon for jaheira early on is the staff of rhynn.

Jan and Haer'Dallis

In my opinion Jan is by far the most entertaining NPC in this game. With Minsc and Boo it can even more. His trap and lock picking border on legendary. With Haer'Dallis' pickpocketing I've no need for Imoen. Both Jan and Haer'Dallis have good Illusion spells (e.g. Imporved Invisibilty) as well combat spells. I switch Minsc in and out of my party. He's stupid and usually stays when you tell him to stay.

no, perhaps if you clua it in you can, but otherwise, no. Its a real shame, pissed me right off. Its the maker of the game, or the books, and he explodes you (I think it was) when you ofcourse refuse. Damn bastard!

@Ensaro Dai: just download ease-of-use from WeiDu and install the Disable Malchor Harpell component.

As far as i know, you can get Belm just by doing the main quests. Simply go the the Ogre tower and take it from the yellow grass thing (forgot the english word for it, sorry).
And the only scimitar in the Underdark i know of is Water's Edge, a +3 Scimitar from House Jae'llat. Download Item Upgrade mod and make Water's Talon to see the true combined power of Water's Edge, Adjatha and Rashad's Talon ;)

water's edge is only +3? i did not know that.

just following the quests and going into the houses you need to go into, you do not get belm.

If you mean you can only get it by doing Captain Dennis' quest, you're wrong. It just lies there, waiting for you to pick it up.

a) Inside this tower, hidden in a bail of hay, is a rather decent find, Belm +2

but what's to stop you from going into it? Belm is worth the extra 3 minutes it takes to walk into that building.

By your logic, the horn of valhalla is unattainable, since there isn't any quest involved with the fish peddler.
