Are you perchange wearing chain or heavier mail?

A larger shield might also be the cause.

with my swashbuckler/cleric , i have to first take off her armor, then second, I have to hit the 'special abilities' icon, and then low and behold theres the 'theif' icon, and the set traps icon. However, shield doesn't seem to matter, as i always leave that on even while shes thieving.

Thieving, like spellcasting, has special conditions that must be met before it can even be tried. Check to make sure that you aren't using chainmail or heavier armor (though there are a few exceptions).

Nah. The special abilities are a bit hard to find when you're not used to looking there. :)

The cleric/thief multi-class has so many special abilities they don't fit on one screen, so you have to choose "special abilities" and then pickpocket or whatever. Anyway, a VERY INTERESTING class combo to play especially in TOB.

Clerics wielding swords and bows... Just like Elven Clerics in D&D3 :)

In a reallife AD&D situation, I would think the cleric/thief could be a really fun character to RP. I did one, once, a kind of Falstaffian sort of guy: lots of fun, extremely fat, very vain, always willing to perform any clerical services--for a nice, rich fee; and certainly not above picking the pocket of anybody he encountered, including his friends. :)

Might even make a fun guild: Brothers of the Gilded Purse. ;)
