Merchant Doppleganger (minor spoiler)
I had a random encounter I have never had before. It happened after I exited the underdark. These people who looked like merchants stopped me and asked who I was. When I told them, they said that their master wanted to talk to me and then they turned into duplicates of my party and attacked me. Who are they?
Thanks![Big Grin :D](./images/smilies/)
Thanks
I will crucify him...real bad

What day is it in your game??
I have been through the game a few times (5) and haven't ever run into this group. Something has to trigger this event. I have seen post on this before and haven't seen a connection yet.

It is probable that they will only attack your party if you spent more than 100 days in the game, since they only confronted my party in my first run through (I took more than 100 days for this

I tried going to the forest of Tethyr once after the Underdark exit, and I still encoutered the dopplegangers. After I leave the Underdark exit, I am first stopped by these merchants, and then by Drizzt Dourden. It happens all the time in my game.

I encounter them no matter what day I'm on, but only after the Underdark.
I think they are Rakshasa sent by Irenicus. Reasons?
They are shapeshifters. They are immune to all but the highest-level spells. Not magic-resistant, but spell-level-immune, like Rakshasa are. And they say "It is time..." They want to force a confrontation. Just a pet theory.

at the risk of disagreeing w/ kevin, they are dopplegangers (imo) since none of the other rakasha fight in anything else than their natural form, not sure it matters either way.
i just got hit w/ them again day 60 or so.
i've only had to fight them twice, and it was right after the romance plot twist after finishing bhodi.
i've been attacked in city, and out.

Those dopplegangers are most likely sent by Irenicus during vhapter 6 since they mention the bounty (or something close) that is offered by a mage. This is the same thing Lanfear (or was it Safana? it was the main wolfwere) tells you during the wolfwere mini-quest in the forest of Tethyr.
