Your Greatest Person in History

Post by moltovir »

(moltovir steals the idea of the Netherlands. Take that, hollanders :p )

So, who do you think is the greatest person in history that was born in the regio that is now your country? I think this doesn't need any further explanation :)

Two rules: the person must exist/have existed (spiderman or santa claus aren't options, despite the ideas of some of you) and at least have done something great for your country or the world (your neighbour isn't an option too).

I think the greatest Belgian person ever is Andries van Wezel, better known as Vesalius. He is the forfather of modern anatomy and provided a major breaktrough in the study of the human body. His medical research and dissection of human bodies were of great importance for the progression of medical science in the New Age.

LMAO! :D Thankfully, I don't think Shatner even made it onto the top 10!
And as far as Aegis goes... I can only hope my fellow citizens have *some* sense of prudence :p

Actually, the top 3 were:

1. Tommy Douglas (the father of Canadian medicare.... )

2. Terry Fox (with one leg he began to run across the country raising money for cancer research.... before the disease returned to claim his life..)

3. Pierre Elliot Trudeau (IMO, the greatest Prime Minister the nation has ever had... or will ever have...)

For my personal choices, I have not really thought about it.. but I have no argument with the above. I would add: Stephen Lewis (U.N. Secretary General's Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa), Irving Layton (poet), and Leonard Cohen (poet, singer, songwriter)

I would have said Niels Bohr, but then I remembered that he lend a hand to Einstein in developing the Nuke... He later wrote a letter to the UN condemning its use and all. I'd say he was a little later at that point. I mean he'd just buildt it.

Otherwise H.C. Andersen wrote a lot of memorable fairy tales for kids.

But Don Cherry did. :D :D :D

Personally though, I think Terry Fox is the greatest (in my opinion of course) Canadian.

I presume we're not allowed to chose ourselves. So in that case I have to say Eric the Red, for creating the first European settlement on Greenland and being the father of Leif Erikson. Leif Erikson being the first European to set foot in America (around 960 A.D.)

P.S. Isn't Santa Claus supposed to be based on a real person. St. Nicolaus or something?

I hope they don't launch a similar campaign, here. It's bound to get a huge number of votes for Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan: a clown and a feel-good actor.

I heard of this fellow called Weasel. :D The modest side of him will not allow him to put forth his name though.

Spider-Man! :D Oh wait, I can't pick Spidey? Damn. :( I guess I'll go with Abe Lincoln then.
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Oh, seriously I would have to say...

Tex Avery... without him there would be no Bugs Bunny,Daffy Duck and Porky Pig and without them there would be no laughter. Where would we be without laughter?
