Not a very important question, but still worth finding out:
1 What are the mushrooms that you find in the Act 1 battlefields used for, I noticed they are the same color as potions. If you can make use of them, then how?
2. What about the chemists herbs that you find?
If you have the alchemy skill, you can use the mushrooms to make potions. I complained up on the company's forums that they should put a guide to alchemy in the early game so that you didn't have to be a Divine Divinity fan to know what that's about, but noooooo....
It's been a while since I played BD, but as I recall, you click on an empty flask(?) and are given a list of the potions you can make, considering the mushrooms you have in your possession. Each potion uses up a certain variety of those mushrooms. As for chemists' herbs--I'm not quite sure what you mean. I don't recall those, but possibly they're also potion ingredients.

From what I've been able to determine, the mushrooms aren't used in BD as they were in DD. I've still not even found an empty flask yet to experiment.
The alchemy plants, though, are used to make potions. Once you've trained in the alchemy skill, have the character with the skill right click on a plant in your inventory, then follow the options. The colors combine differently to make various potions (I'm not sure which are which yet, except red & blue = health). Your character's skill level determines how large a potion (s)he can make. And, of course, the alchemy combine skill allows you to combine the potions to make new ones. Such as a health and a mana combine to make a regeneration. Again, the skill level determines how large of potions you're allowed to combine.
Somewhere, I found a nice little chart on how all of it works. Might have been on the Beyond Divinity website (the link you get when you install the game), but I'm not sure now. Good luck!

Yes; you're right. I was confused, there. Here's a link to a thread that shows what plants are combined to produce which effects. I can't excerpt it here, since it uses game screens for illustration. Hope it helps.

Thank you for the quick replies! So far from what I have found you cannot even take the mushrooms that are on the ground so I suppose they serve no purpose. Anyway since this section is "Little questions" I have a few more.
Which is first, Beyond or Divine Divinity? I am new to the game and bought the special box set that came with both of them. And when does the expansion kick in after the first?
I have not yet checked out the link you posted so I may find my answer there, but can you combine the attribute potions if your combine skill is high enough?
Divine Divinity was released, first. I think you'll find all your alchemy questions answered in those illustrations.
