Problem with Alternative Solution for Main Quest(Spoiler)

Post by Nagroth »

Hi !

I recently tried to solve the main quest by the alternative route : slay Vivec and then take Wraithguard to the last living dwarf. However, the dwarf needs two books to activate the gauntlet. I acquired the two books and brought them to the dwarf. He recognizes them, and tells me to return a day later, however he does not take the books. When I come back the day later, he tells me he has learned everything there is to learn about Wraithguard, however he does not activate it, I can click on every topic there is. Did I do anything wrong, or what do I have to do to activate Wraithguard ? Alternatively, how can I use the console to get a functioning Wraithguard and proceed with the quest ?

Well... you need to have higher reputation than 32.. when you have that he will activate it for you.. (perhaps becuse then he knows you are good guy and you deserve that power..)

Well, I don´t know if his disposition to me is higher than 32 (think so, not sure). What´s funny though is that his reply is strange. When I first bring him the books, he tells me to come back in a day (but doesn´t take the books, they are still in my inventory. I waitfor 24 hours and talk to him again. He tells me that he has learned everything there is to learn about Wraithguard, and that he can try to restore it. But that´s it. Sometimes, even the "come back in a day"-dialog appears again.
I tried clicking on every topic in the dialog tree, but the damned dwarf simply would not restore Wraithguard. To me, this looks like a bug, it happened to me before with another PC that I could not proceed with the main quest because the Zainab chieftain would not initiate a certain dialogue.
Will check the dwarf´s disposition to me when I get back home, I hope that fixes it.
If not, do you know the console command to get a functioning Wraithguard ?

PS : How can I be a good guy ? I slew a god !

REPUTATION... not disposition...

REPUTATION is how famous you are in morrowind...

You can see it in your inventory screen..

Oops, that might be difficult... don´t know my reputation off-hand. But are you sure you´re correct ?
There are many people who claim to have solved the main quest as a vampire, using the alternative way, and I can´t imagine that a vampire could accrue enough reputation to pull it off. I just killed their god, how can people actually hold me in high regards for it ?
Also, if reputation is indeed the deciding factor, shouldn´t he at least tell me why he won´t activate Wraithguard ? Something like the "I don´t trust you enough for this" you get to hear when your disposition to a NPC is too low ?

In fact, yes, he SHOULD tell you something of the sort, if CS tells the truth. Reputation can be viewed in the same screen that you use to view your skills stats, right below your bounty.

Alternatively, you can take it to Gnisis to the Telvanni, if you still have Wraithguard with it. I believe that the console command is 'player -> additem "wraithguard" 1' OR 'player -> additem "wraithguard_left" 1', without the 's. I'm not entirely sure about this command however, and it may be more practical to use the journal setting commands.

Yeah, I know where to find out about my reputation.
Hm, guess I´ll try the Gnisis guy then, see what he says. If all fails, I´ll try the console to go on with the quest.
Does anybody know the exact console command ?

Thanks for all the help !

Alternate Route #1: Killing Vivec
The main quest can diverge significantly here for those who wish to do things the hard way. Instead of meeting Vivec and acquiring the Wraithguard as described above, a powerful character can instead simply break into Vivec's Palace, kill the god and steal the Wraithguard (which is simply named as an Unique Dwemer Artifact). Of course, this is far from easy, but certainly possible. Once this is done, you are basically forced into ending the main quest the hard way. Vivec is level 100 and packs a huge wallop when he hits you, so be prepared for a very long and difficult fight. By obtaining the artifact in this manner, you can basically bypass all the previous portions of the main quest (I assume).
Unfortunately, things become complicated in that it was Vivec who taught you how to properly use the Wraithguard, so when you kill him and steal the glove, it is not functioning. There is one character in the game that will be able to aid you with the artifact (think about someone intimate with ancient Dwemer artifacts)...Yagrum Bagarn, the last living Dwarf found in the Corprusarmium under Tel Fyr.

Travel to Tel Fyr and speak with Yagrum about the artifact, which he'll indeed identify as the Wraithguard, providing that you have a reputation of 20 and a disposition with Yagrum of 90 (or, alternatively, a reputation of 30 and the papers Dagoth Ur's Plans and The Plan to Defeath Dagoth Ur, found in Vivec's Palace). The Dwarf actually help make the Wraithguard and says that he can most likely figure it out, but he needs Kagrenac's Planbook and Journals. The planbook is in Tureynulal (Kagrenac's Library) and the journals in Enudusal (Kagrenac's Study), both within the Ghostfence region.

Return to Yagrum with the Planbook and Journal and he will activate the Wraithguard. The only catch here, and it is a rather large one, is that since you stole and hacked into the artifact, it will backfire the first time you equip it, dealing anywhere from 201 to 225 hp of damage to you. You best buff up as much as you can so that you are not killed immediately. This is just a one time thing and the gauntlet will work normally afterwards.

From here on, you can follow the remaining walkthrough of the main quest as you wish, knowing that you had to be different and do things the hard way.

Alternate Route #2: Just Wait
There is a way of bypassing the fourth and fifth trials without killing Vivec. If you take a long time to complete the 3rd trial (eg: while completing other quests) then Nibani tells you that she is worried and that you should see the Archdeacon in Vivec High Fane. He then points you in the direction of Vivec who will recognise you and give you Wraithguard. This will save a lot of hiking around the various camps and councillors (although I guess you have to be really very late in the main quest before this is proposed).

Update :

Checked in with the Dwarf yesterday. Seems my PC has a reputation of 22. However, I can´t tell you the dwarf´s disposition towards me because the display is gone, same for the persuasion button.
I added Wraithguard to my inventory via the console and will proceed from there, hopefully without further glitches.

Thanks for the help !
