I decided to just walk right up to Durlag's Tower, rather than take the tour offered in Ulgoth's Beard. I didn't feel I was high enough level when I was visiting Ulgoth's Beard, so I did a ton more quests, and walked up to the Tower on my own after escaping from the prison in Candlekeep.
Anyway, am I missing out on anything by not taking the tour? I'm still at a point where I could just walk out of the tower and get back to Ulgoth's Beard for the tour.
TIA.

I think, and don't quote me on this

if you take the tour you enter into a public chamber and talk with some people then a demon appears and spells havok for those around. Kind of neat. You can go back to Ulgoths beard and still take the tour. Like I said, I could be wrong, but I thin thats how I did it last time through.

The tour is not mandatory, although you do get Ike giving you some background and info on the Tower, as well as a cool scene where the Demon Knight turns up and vapourises the tourists. Made me laugh. Also, you can claim Ike's rune stone off his body. This is required to get deeper into the Tower (but I can't remember exactly where/which level).
