A friend (spoiler)

Post by TheSheriff »

Having beaten the game, I am still not certain who the anonymous friend is, who email's you from time to time, relating game events to a chess match.

It is obvious that this 'friend' keeps a pretty close eye on what you are doing, as his cryptic emails are given out almost immediately after a mission is complete.

When you move to Santa Monica, 'A pawn is moved'

When Grout dies to frame Nines, at LaCroix's bidding 'A bishop is sacrificed for the King'

When LaCroix declares the blood hunt on Nines 'A gambit has been played, the King leaves himself open'

When you kill Bach 'The white bishop falls'

Given the fact whoever this friend is seems to follow your progress closely, yet refers to the prince as a third person, leads me to think it is either Beckett or Jack. Any other people willing to venture a guess, feel free to send one.

It might very well be either... at the very end, a friend tellls you "Don't open it." Could be either one of them hinting for you... seems unlikely it'd be Beckett since he just told you in person... so I guess its Jack? Maybe?

My money is on the mysterious cabbie.

Beckett doesn't seem all that on top of things. Also he's a loner who operates outside the existing power structure, so why would he be interested in subtly arranging its downfall? Why would he care enough?

Jack just doesn't seem like the type to be throwing out chess metaphors. Any message from him would be more along the lines of "Staked that nut-job, Grout. Now the brakes are off and we're all on a roller-coaster ride to Hell."

Max would be the only other possibility. The tone of the comments are right, but I don't see Max as being in-the-know enough to make them.

Well, the interesting thing is that you get the first e-mail just as soon as you reach your haven, so I'm guessing that whoever it was, he was probably present during your trial, since your presence isn't exactly a relevant matter that early in the game (in the beginning you're just another clueless fledgling, nothing to write home about)....

Jack and Cabbie (spoiler)

Jack seems a very likely candidate in my book, because he is practically the first vampire who has any lengthy interaction with you. Jack seems to be a bit of a loner as well (during the execution sequence, the rest of the Anarchs are sitting by Nines, and he is off in a shadowy spot leaning on a pillar, smoking. Even though Jack has talks the tough guy act in person, I dont necessarily believe he might speak the same way in an email. Jack is one of the oldest kindred you run across in the game, so is undoubtedly smart, despite the brutish facade.

The cabbie is also another good suggestion, as he knows whenever you go some where. I am also debating whether or not the cabbie is Caine. If the cabbie is Caine, he would likely be orchestrating this whole thing while remaining fairly anonymous, and would probably be content to send you cryptic emails to puzzle and confuse you for his own entertainment.

As for the "Dont open it" email, I think this one points to Jack. Cabbie, (or Caine) would have little to fear from Messarach, so I would think he would not care one way or the other if it were opened. Jack on the other hand always seems to be looking out for the well being of your vamp. Jack tows Messerach out of the sarcophagus and fills it with C4, so likely does not want you to blow youself up, so he might warn you to not open it.

I'll say Jack

Because he always had an insight on things... He was always present at the right time and he's the one that connects you with Caine. If you've finished the game annarchs way, you'll see jack glad that things worked accordingly to the plan, next to the mummy of messerach and in the background appears caine, saying that all you have to do is make sure that the blood bounds are followed, or something along the lines . Jack seems to be the one in direct connection with caine and jack seems to be the one pulling the strings in order to regain the city. Furthermore, if you ask the annarchs about jack during the game, you'll gain incredible information about his history... (he also used to be a pirate :) )
To end this, I say it's jack, but he's got the info from Caine
