I just got Baldur's Gate II for Christmas and when I tried to install it it screwed up so I ctrl + alt + deleted it. Apparently the 3rd disk was badly scratched. A lot of the stuff got installed but the "uninstall" feature didn't get installed. We took it back and got a new copy of BGII. Here's the problem, I couldn't uninstall what had already been installed so I just deleted the folder I installed BGII in. But now when I put the first disk of the new copy in the thing pops up but gives no option to install it. It's like my computer still thinks BGII is in there even though it isn't. Now I can't install it! Help me! Tell me what's wrong and what I have to do please! Thanks.
Alright , take it easy. Just becaused you deleted a game without uninstalling it does not mean you cant install it again. But since you havent maken a clean uninstall, your OS still thinks its installed. Because of this, the game thinks its installed, and therefore it doesnt give you the option. But hey, dont worry, this just disables the SHORTCUT from the autostart menu, not the actual thing. So just go into the directory of the first CD... (using explorer probably) .... and there will be a file called SETUP.... just click it and you're ready to go. So dont worry, your christmas will be just as merry as the next guys'.
If that doesn't work, which is should to be honest, you can probably just try Add/Remove programs or search through Explorer for all BG2 related folders then remove them that way.
No see I think thats what he tried... but you cant remove something that isnt there right???... right... so just go into the directory of the cd and run the setup file manually, remember that the option in the autostart menu is only a SHORTCUT and has no effect on the actual game files. Dont worry

cause then something is wrong... I am pretty surprised that a setup file can act as a shortcut for an uninstall mechanism... so either it's really screwed up or you're doing something wrong

I don't believe anything transformed on his system; I think it's just missing certain files so the setup is only half there. You can have a shortcut for a program that's only half there; it's rare when it happens but it's possible and I've seen stranger. If he regedits it and pulls everything relating to BG2 then that may straighten things out.
So what yer telling me is that you tried to install it before, but because of a faulty cd the installation process was interrupted, leaving you with a disfunctional copy of BG II on your hd with no option to unistall it.. so you delete it like anyone else would of done.. get a fresh cd, and try to reinstall it, but it just wont go because the setup leads to an automatical uninstallation mechanism, that cannot take away something that doesnt exist... that is fucked up my friends, fucked beyond all measures.. If I was there Id fiddle around for awhile... but I duno what I can do from here
there's not one here who'd disagree that his system is currently FUBAR, but let's think of something here that may help. I think regediting is the way to go, but if he tries it and it doesn't work I don't know what else to try. Anyone got suggestions?
