Installation error 1305

Post by memimo »

Hi,

I got Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines for Christmas and haven’t been able to get it to install. I’m aware that our system does not meet the minimum requirements to play the game, but I just assumed I’d be able to install normally – a poor system has never stopped me from doing that much before. I’ve got an extra 512 mb of ram coming, but I can’t install it till the 29th, before you can ask.

The main problem is with disk 2 – although I haven’t reached disk 3 in the installation, yet. I can install disk one, although it does take a fair amount of time, about 20 mins. However, when I try disk 2, I get a fair way into it – again, about 20 mins later – but usually the .mp3 lines stops copying and a while later I get this error message. ‘Error 1305.Error reading from file E:\Setup\Data\Vampire\sound\character\dlg\santa monica\ etc (the file and location change, but the message remains the same). Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.’ I can either Retry or Cancel. Sometimes other files stop copying, but it usually the .mp3s, I’m not sure if this is in any significant or not.

When I put any of the disks in, the system seems to slow down quite a bit, but it is the most noticeable with disk 2. CPU usage doesn’t increase, but the ‘action’light on my cd/dvd drive lights up, along with the every other light on the front of the case. The system comes to a standstill, and little things like the ‘details’ viewer in My Computer expands but shows nothing. When I right-click on the E:\ drive (Compaq makes a D:\ partition to store all it’s recovery files) with disk 2 in, My Computer freezes and the computer needs to be restarted.

I’ve tried obvious things like checking, cleaning and eventually exchanging the cd’s where I bought the game, but there’s been no improvement. I’ve also doing what Microsoft recommends in its knowledge databank, like re-installing the windows explorer and install shield. I’ve visited other forums and there have been a few other error 1305 cases, and things like replacing the msi.dll file fixed it, but not on this computer. I just formatted the hard drive, so every change I made should be undone, and I thought that anything that was conflicting with the installer would be removed.

Any help would be really appreciated, coz I really want to play this game, plus, now it’s personal… Although, I think I might have to wait till I can afford to buy myself a new computer. I’m using the family Compaq Presario S3180AN with an AMD Athlon 2600+ (2.08 GHz) with 256 mb of ram, tho only 192 is available as we have an integrated videocard. I know that that the system doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, but I should be able to install, right?

Thanku for even reading all that!

Well, you NEED a dedicated videocard, I believe. That's what the system requirements say. And 192 megs of RAM will give you about 5 fps. If you're lucky that is. This is an unoptimized version of the Source engine (since they only licensed, and didn't create it), running with a lot of RPG stuff in the background, so even if it installs... I truly doubt you'll get anything resemebling a playable experience.

That being said: wow. You've got yourself a special case, it seems. Kudos for trying every tip in the book... those are the kinds of information I was going to give. Have you tried using those discs on a different computer, one that preferably meets the minimum specs? Has your CD drive ever had problems with other cds (I ask because I had a similar problem with Icewind Dale 1 on an old Pentium, where the CD drive broke and would bring down the system with it when I inserted a cd).

If worse comes to worse, you might try to have a friend create isos out of the cds for you, burn them onto blank cds as a data file (so that you can copy the iso directly onto your hard-drive), and then use daemon tools or alcohol 120% to mount them. You own the game, so its not illegal (though you're getting into a grey area here, so its your choice).

My suspicion is a borked cd drive, since you already exchanged cds, reformated Windows, and did so many other things. I hope this helped... its mostly rambling and ideas, but better than nothing, right?

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Heya,

At this point in time, I just want to install the game. I guess I could ask my dad to buy a video card, but he's already pretty obsessive about me and my bro 'hijacking' his workstation. And about the 192 ram -- I'm going to install an extra 512 on the 29th, when I actually get the stick.

I'm not too sure about mounting cd's using alcohol 120%. That's about the one thing I didn't try, tho I made copies of the cd's with CloneCD hoping that activision just used really cheap and nasty cd's. How do u create isos out of the cds and then mount them?

I may try swapping the cd drive from one of our older computers today.

Thanku, and merry christmas for yesterday!

Latest attempt

So, I've done every so called solution to this error 1305 that microsoft has come up with. Acitivision has not yet sent me a reply -- not including that automatic response telling me to check the activision site for troubleshooting.

I've managed to create copies of the cds using clonecd, but I cant make .isos out of disk 2. i get to about 98/99% complete (in both the image creation and the installation) and then it fails. Ive tried 2 other computers, and they both experienced the same problems. Could it be possible that I got 2 botched disk 2's?

I also updated our computer -- we now have 574mb of ram available and our cd/dvd drive has the latest firmware available.

Clean boots do not help me in the slightest.

I'm going to move this thead to the Tech forum, in the hopes that somebody there with a different slant might have some better ideas for you.

Sp2

Activision suggested that I uninstall SP2 for XP. The only noticeable change was that our antivirus.. didnt like the move.

If the computer freezes when disk 2 is in, without running the install program, surely this means that our comp. is having a hard time reading the disk... but whats the problem?

Personally - I'd never uninstall SP2 in order to get a game working, but that is just me :D

It sounds as thought the CD-drive can't find the tracks, possible due to a type of copyprotection or what not.

I don't know of how to do this, because I've never had to - but try seeing if you can turn down the speed of your CD drive so it reads with a lower speed then what it "supposed to". (either via settings or some software... should be possible somehow)
Also - if you have access to another drive/computer - try shifting the drives around and placing another (older?) drive in your computer and see if that can read the disc.

That is about all I can provide at the moment - I hope you figure out how to get it installed :)

I had the exact same problem, only my computer *does* meet (and in some ways exceed) the minimum system requirements to run this game. I'm not as computer-saavy, so I resorted to mindlessly hitting "retry" each time I got a 1305 error. Sometimes that worked on the first try, sometimes I had to "retry" several times for a given line of code. Then it would install a few lines okay, and pop up with a new 1305 error. I kept a log of the error messages for a while, enough to see that all of my problems were on disk 2, always with the Santa Monica MP3 dialogue lines.

With stubborn effort, over the course of eight hours, I never got farther than the "D"s of the Santa Monica npcs. On several attempts, I got impatient and started over, after letting it do the automatic uninstall. On a few other occasions, the installation crashed and then uninstalled itself.

Also, none of the internet links on disc 1 worked, which frustrated my initial efforts to get tech support. Finally, my girlfriend contacted the online retailer that she bought the game from (yes, it was her X-Mas present for me), and they had her send the game back in for an exchange. I am hoping that the 1305 errors had to do with a flawed disk... my retry attempts shouldn't have succeeded if the problem was on my computer, right?

According to Microsoft a 1305 error is a fault in InstallShield. However, in this case I'd suspect your CD-ROM drive simply can't cope with the copy protection as Xan suggested. If you can, try installing the game using a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive as their firmware can properly read sector error copy protection (depending on the drive specifics. Pioneer would be my first choice to try).

I think I think, therefore I might be.

I had massive problems install VtM:B as well as other games until after random web searches came up with the fact that is was XP Service Pack 2 clashing with this specific version of InstallShield causing the problems.

Esssentially Microsoft changed the API for InstallShield in Service Pack 2. InstallShield just crashes out after rolling back the install.

Unfortunately neither MS or InstallShield want to own up to this bug.

The solution is not a good one: uninstall SP2.

It's been a while...

Brief update.

I've tried installing on two other computers: one install experienced the same problem and the other was strange...

VTMB installed fine, but the game wouldn't play -- an error popped up on the monitor saying something about the frquency was out of range. I've discovered that it is a hardware problem -- the monitor is old and has had it. No problem, uninstalled the game, then I was asked to install the game again and it wouldn't install. Error 1305.

Unless I've been incredibly unlucky and managed to find 5 optical drives that can't work out the copyright protection... thats not the issue.

Any more intuitive ideas?

I'm back home on my computer, which has enjoyed a brief fling with a cd drive about 8 times its age.

Feeling kinda stupid now that it's obvious it was copyright protection stopping the install... but my defence is I tried 5 or 6 other drives. When all else fails turn to the old stuff...? The point is it works, and apart from some minor bugs, its all good. :)
