I was wondering.. Who's your favorite npc (and for what type of main character)? I've only started playing a melee technologist (level 20 due to the portal near Liam's workshop) and so far I've only got Virgil. I very rarely let him fight. I usually just let him stay at the back and heal me while I do all the fighting. He's beginning to lose his effectivity, though. Who's the best healer for a techno, anyway? Is Jayna any good? Only been to Dernholm and Blackroot and packing up for Tarant. Hehe.
And where's the best place to get schematics? And what're the best weapons and armour I can make?

My favourite NPC tends to be Virgil because you get him early and he'll almost always be the same level as you throughout the game. He has both magic and technology healing skills and is quite effective at melee added to this he doesn't care how good or evil you are, which is a nice change. His shortcomings are he'll keep trying to heal you with bandages, magic or other equipment often when you don't want him to, sometimes knocking himself unconcious from lack of fatigue when his magic fails to affect your technological prowress. Other things that get on my nerves are "ARE YOU BLIND! I mean better luck next time!"
Next will be Sogg Mead for his melee and carry skills, additionally being a character who couldn't care less if you killed 100 good people or save them. He's quite easy to get and quite good.
Magnus is probably my final favourite because he has the ability to make a few items and it will make balanced swords and balanced axes. Additionally he has "Mysterious Dwarfen Gauntlets", which give a nice boost to your stats when you have a high tech level.

Jayna is unusual in that she isn't really that good a healer, she is excellent for making healing salves though and that alone is worth having her because she can make use of all those kadura stems and save you points in the relevant tech skills, but her healing ability is about the same if not lesser than Virgil's (!)

When you have a high dexterity it is most recommended that you increase your lockpicking skill to maximum, then you can wait until nightfall and sneak into the backrooms of many locations and steal all the armour, money, scrolls or schematics that you want. Collecting schematics is nice but the only ones that are really of interest are Automatron, Bronwick's Gun and the Pryrotechnic axe. Still they're fun to collect but you need to have a high amount of skill in the relevant classes to use them.
Most can be found in the stores of Tarant or in hidden areas in the major cities.
