just a thought i had about evil alligments

im not a specialist on ad&d rules but i wondered about this a few times:
the evil character leave if ur reputation is 18 or highter. but why would they leave?
why would they care if their reputation is good? i mean its not like evil ppl try to proclaim to the whole world that they are evil...maybe the chaotic evil ones.
but im pretty sure a lawfull evil character would WANT his reputation as high as possible and possibly and neutral evil character too,
do you guys have any comments on that?
p.s. i know they had to make it like this for the gameĀ“s sake but still i get pissed whenever i see edwin or kagain complaining about my reputation. wouldnt a good reputation enable them to do their evil deeds in a lawfull way more then if they had a low reputation?
