Security Spikes

Post by Ryngard »

I have a quick question that I cannot seem to find the answer to. How exactly do you use Security Spikes? I know that in KotOR2 that you actually choose them on your tool bar now, but in KotOR you have no option other than Bash or Security. How do you use them?

Spoiler... with possible answer

I am not sure about this but I think that security spikes are very rarely used, but can be used when asked. They are only used when you try to make a droid work, and not in all circumstances.
there is one place where one is required on the Great Walkway of Kashyyk

As far as I know, security spikes are automatically used when hacking a computer for opening doors or disabling certain defences. When you have a higher skil in computers, you need less spikes for the same operation.
Same goes for repairing robots, you just need repair parts for them.

Can I just say that I use it to raise funds? It's useless otherwise...

yeah my bad, I was referring to computer spikes...
Security spikes help in unlocking doors and containers, just by having them.

The security spike and security spike tunneler can be used on locked doors or contains when your security simply isn't high enough. They can be used when highlighted on said door or container; they are lumped in with the stims and medpacks.

computer spikes are different from security spikes.

Can someone explain to me exactly what these do and how to use them. I never did figure out exactly what they do, even after playing through 4 or 5 times.

Also, what are the differences between Security Spikes and the Tunnelers?

They add to your security skill on a one time check. I believe the tunnelers add more to the skill than the regular spike. Don't remember where I read this. Maybe the strategy guide. I just explained how to use them on the post above yours -- see my previous post in this thread.

I never use them except to increase the old piggy bank. If I don't want to bash something I just swap to a different character like Mission or T3, (such a handy wee chap to have about) and hey presto the box is opened. If I can't change characters then Mr Lightsaber just chops the top off the offending locked item. :D

Well, I know that in KotOR2 you can choose to use them on locked doors/chests and they are lumped in with the medpacs. In KotOR I cannot find an option to use them so they must indeed be used automatically.

Now, I am assuming they are only used automatically if they would allow you to open the locked door/chest. I have one security spike on me and when I use Security with my main character, I either succeed or fail and the spike is never used up.

I am currently thinking that it is a bug that you cannot use them, I think they were intended to be an option (Bash, Security Skill, Security Spike/Tunneler) or something like that but were coded out on accident.

They are not used automatically. They are accessed just like medpacs. There is no bug. At least, not in the xbox version. I've not played it on the PC.
