Boot Hill

Anyone played this one? It came out around the same time as 1st Ed Gamma World and ADnD. Loads of fun for the younger player, with furious gun fights, lost gold mines, invading Mexicans and dangerous Indians.

I was GMing a game of this a little while ago, and mixed in Indian mysticism and horror with a standard game. Was very enjoyable.

I have seen it around. It's popular at gaming events because it's a simple concept everyone is familiar with. What's the system like?

Very basic, very easy to run and get a hold of. It's not d20, and doesn't have anything like classes or races. It's skill based, and everything is d100. If you get hit by a bullet it is a minor, major or death level wound, depending on location and Accuracy roll.

All in all, good for a rainy arvo. Not so good for a long campaign. That said, I have played Boot Hill over quite a long period of time, many years ago.

I like the damage system. More realistic than Dnd, I also like the WoD and Alternity damage systems for that reason.

I'm not up on the Alternity and WOD damage systems... I do find the DnD one frustrating at times, but haven't seen any way of modifying or changing it. Although I will put PCs in "insta-death" situations, vis-a-vis "he has a knife at yout throat - you will die if you struggle" type stuff.

I do that too. Basically Alternity had like 4 independant types of damage.. I can't remember, but they affected you differently. WoD has damage which can be instantly healed or soaked and healed by spending blood points etc., and aggravated damage from fire or sunlight etc that cannot be soaked. That's how you usually go about killing a vampire at night.

I don't like one damage system better then an other.
The WoD system is logical for modern days (haven't played it midevil) and the different damages make a clear difference between mortals and supernaturals.

The d&d system has different types of damage but they all work the same. The creatures itself have modifiers and whatnot to make it logical for them how they deal/get damage. There are way to many types of creatures to work with the WoD rules. So the d&d rules work fine for d&d. Altering in ways like Grait Hairy pointed out is perfect for a DM to make combat more interesting and exciting. I do it too.

DnD damage rules are pretty straight-forward. I think that's because in DnD there is a lot more combat in the average DnD-game than in the average WoD-game. If you would apply the WoD-damage rules to DnD it would drive you crazy to calculate your new attack bonus, movement, etc. Combats would take up entire evenings.

If you want an alternate damage/hp-system with DnD, use the Star Wars-system. It's pretty good

You're right about the complexity of the WoD system not working in DnD. I also like the Shadowrun system, but you would have to really rework DnD to use that.

I've always found the Shadowrun rules rather clunky and overtly complex for the setting. A friend of mine, in conjunction with myself, created a cut down version of the rules, and implemented some d20 stuff in there. Works a lot smoother now!

Gidday Mark,

What's the availability of your game in Australia? Will gaming shops be able to stock it? Or is it strictly a "purchase over the web" proposition.

Personally, I prefer to be able to read a rulebook before buying it. Understand where I am coming from - I have nearly 30 years of roleplaying experience, and I have seen some real clunkers in that time. I really want to sit and read the rules - fully - before I spend the $100 on the book.

Well, it won't be released for a while, but all of our products are available through all major and nearly all minor gaming distributors. So when it does come out, you shouldn't have any problem. :)
