Gaming problems

Post by ladyblack »

Hello again

I have recently loaded up NWN on my new computer, but whilst playing, the game suddenly stops, says there is an error and kicks me out to my windows screen.

Now, I have all the patches on a disc, plus a friend of mine says that his problem was that his graphics card was too good for the game (or was slightly incompatible) and had to 'unlock' the card in order for the two to work together. However, he's made me very nervous to upload the Grahpics card solution as of course this will affect the entire computer and he says that my other games may suddenly not work.

Is there anyone here who has suffered from the same problem, and can they tell me the specific patch/es that they used to cure it? Or have they had the same problem with their Graphics card? My friend's card is a Radeon - the absolute top notch one. I couldn't afford that, so I got the 9800 All in Wonder one instead.

I have somewhat frequent crashes with most of Biowares recent games on my 9800 Pro. Try downloading the most recent drivers for your card. I think it is a problem on most ATi cards.

Ah, I will have to play this weekend and write it down exactly. It's something like "Bioware installtion has experienced an error and will now shut down. Please reboot your machine if there are continuing problems" but I guess you're asking for the techincal bit of info that comes after "error". I will let you know. From what Noober is saying, it sounds like I'll have to do the Graphics card download (eep!). I've been instructed on how to do a "Restore system" (gulp), so I'll get the error message first and then see if I can stuff things up completely after that..... :-)

Cheers

Hello again

OK, played some more this weekend, and it crashed whilst I was examining an empty cart. First of all it give the message about "Microsoft Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry" etc. Then it says to send off a report, but as I'm not on the Internet, I can't. When you look at the report, it says :-

AppName : nwmain.exe
ApprVer 1.0.0.0.
Modname nwmain.exe
ModVer 1.0.0.0. offset33efb2

Then it says there's a more detailed account, but it's PAGES long. The file it wants examined is in :-

C:\DOCUMENT~1\JESSIC~\locals~1\Temp\58f7_appcompatt.txt

Does this help?

Well - according to what I can see - the file you mention is simply the file Windows wants to send to Microsoft, so that isn't terrible importent.

Unfortunally - that error message can cover quite a lot, so it would be hard to pinpoint where to begin.

Upgrading the graphic cards drivers to the latest would likely be the most painless first step. Try checking your dxdiag in the Direct X (run dxdiag from the run menu in the start) and getting it to test all your devices from sound to graphics and see if there is a possible conflict/error.

Uninstall and reinstall is also a possiblity, because it could be areas on the harddrive that is a problem. Possible on a different drive/partition would also be a step one could take.
It could possible be the RAM as well.
Do you have this problem with various other software - or is NwN the only one?, what about other games?. If NwN is the only one - then it dosen't seem likely that it could be the harddrive or the RAM.

It is a very tricky error to debug, and it could possible be good, trying to contact Bioware to see if they know something about it.

Also - do you have any antivirus or firewalls running while playing - it could be something there conflicts?

Other then that - I'm pretty blank.

Thanks for the help Xandax. Well, until yesterday I would have said that NWN was the only game with problems, but yesterday the computer started having problems with "Alexander". I don't know if you've seen this game, but the graphics are beautiful. I suspect that that means it also gives computers a hard time. I had thought it was the processing speed, but I have had a couple of people who have looked at that and said it should be fine.

Wih "Alexander", it does not chuck me out, but it does begin to jerk. It wasn't a problem at first, but became chronic yesterday when it tried to deal with LOTS of units on screen at the same time.

OK, looks like it's the card then. I have only just installed the game again, so I don't think that would be the problem.

I will try what you suggest when I return, thanks again.
