Totally Frustrated w/Keep

Post by Jyrran »

What can I possibly be doing wrong in the de'Arnise Keep that it would beat me so badly!! The party I have is:
Jyrran - Figther lvl 8, AC 2, 101 HP
Yoshimo - Bounty Hunter lvl 11, AC 3, 76 HP (I can't believe he's lvl 11 and such a wimp!)
Anomen - Cleric lvl 8/Fighter lvl 7, AC 2, 86 HP
Minsc - Ranger lvl 8, AC 0, 81 HP
Aerie - Cleric lvl 8/Mage lvl 7, AC 7, 32 HP (if it wasn't for the spellcasting...)
Jaheira - Fighter lvl 7/Druid lvl 9, AC -5, 69 HP

I've tried every tactic I found on the boards and STILL Torgal and his lackies whack me to bits! I even set the bloody difficulty level to novice!

I've gotten Frostreaver, the Flail of Ages, and the Knee-Capper (war hammer).

I still haven't been able to beat the iron golem either, although I did get the others.

The $64,000 question is: what's lost if I just leave and come back when I'm feeling a bit more brutish?

Thanks for help!

I'd recommend using the fog of war to your advantage, luring Torgal out first then wacking his henchmen at your leisure. If that's too cheap for you, you may want to go back later. I don't think you lose anything, but I've never tried it.

As for the golem, you may notice that he's too big to follow you outside the room. If you have Lilarcor, you can stand outside and smack him until he dies. Any +3 or better weapon will work, but Lilarcor has enough reach so you can get him without him getting you. ;)

also, you got yoshimo in your group! TRAPS!! =)
you can set traps, camp/rest, set more traps. by the time you pull him to the room with all the traps, there won't be much of him left for you to kill. =)

Torgal is only hard because he 1. Sees invisible/sneak and 2. Has a quick regeneration ability.
This combo actually prevents a lot of cheesy ways of beating him.

Just bait him out and close the door to keep his buddies from joining- keep the heat on him (rotating tanks as needed)- and cast every direct damage spell invented.

Or you can get him with a buttload of skulltraps- like I did... :)

Torgal comes charging out of his room. Try casting web or entangle. If he's held in place you can weaken him with missiles and spells.

I wasn't sure that web was actually holding him -- as if he had free movement in my game. But, I drew out each troll individually.

With Torgal, I summoned everything I could to keep him busy, while using my weaker guys to shoot arrows, etc.

The fog of war w/ cloudkill can work too. Cast it where you still can't see him, and go back and close the door. He has magic resistance so it might not work, but it got him in one of my games.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I don't have a couple of the weapons/spells you suggest (Lilacor, fog of war). I have cloudkill, but it doesn't appear to work as well as I'd like. I've got a wand of monster summoning that can keep them busy for a bit (depending on how many I get). Unfortunately, Yoshimo only sets snares or special snares - when he tries to set the special snares he generally fails and takes damage (he's a wimp!).

I may decide to bag it until I'm stronger and come back for them. It's a real drag spending so much time fighting one set of monsters (been going at this for days!).

Thanks again!

Hey don't give up just yet. You see I play very cheap ( No cheats or powergaming of course) but its just fun. Here is how I beat them. Plus I was not strong at all. About your lvl. Ok first make sure to cast haste on all your guys. Now take Minsc, Yourself and Anomen and put them in front. Put your others in the back. Walk up to Torgal with just one of your guys. Make him do the little speech. then they will all charge you. When they start attacking, you start attacking torgal with your whole party. Dont even try to use magic on this bastard its useless, it will go through sometimes but not enough. So pure damage that SOB. Take my word when the whole party is wooping his ass he will fall. And if one of your chars fighters who is taking the damage gets injured just use a potion and if it dont help just move him out a bit. After Torgal is dead, the other two wussies are a pushover.
Trap? What trap!? Ah shi....!!!!

i beat him with a low level party by having Nalia polymorph herself into a mustard jelly and sat her in the doorway, all the trolls concentrated their attacks on her, but couldn't do any damage. The rest of the party used either spells or missile weapons to knock them down.
