Ragnorak!
When/if the Ragnorak were to come, which side owuld you be on? I'd have to say gods, they have got the style, and the awesomenames. I would probably like being Loki, but his powers seem pretty inconsistant, one second he turns into a bird and flys away, then the next time he is stuck on a inceberg and cant get off. Anyway, for those who don't know, Ragnorak is like Norse apocolypse, the Nordic Gods will be attacked by the Giants, and Mankind will be caught inbetween and lotsa people will die.

Come not between the Witch King and his prey, or he will not slay thee in thy turn, but will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the lidless Eye.
Sides? I'm gonna climb onto my roof and get twisted and laugh as everything goes nuts all over. Picking sides means your gonna get screwed somehow. You just sit and amuse yourself with the going's-on's and down a few bottles till you fall of the roof.

I'd rather just get twisted and have fun before everyone gets mauled and killed. Get all the drinking in you'd do in the next 20 years or so before you go you know? I'm not getting cheated my fun for anything! I think those Norse gods would understand and approve.

If I remember correctly a few of the Gods actually survive to see a better world, so one of them would be my answer.

The Poetic Edda, particularly the part called Völuspá. If you prefer prose then read the Prose Edda. Both are easily found on the internet if you are lazy.

I find them quite humorous at times.
Then happens what will seem a great miracle, that the wolf devours the sun, and this will seem a great loss. The other wolf will devour the moon, and this too will cause great mischief.

BTW: It's spelled Ragnarok, and it's a prophecy made by the Norns of Norse mythology on how the age of the Gods ends and the age of Man begins. Tolkien got a lot of his inspiration for his own myth from it.

Isn't Balder the only god to survive? Or at least he will recreate the world or something.

Balder dies, but he returns from deaths kingdom and go to Valhalla. IIRC Oden's brother and two of his son's survive, and two of Thor's sons also survive and inherit Mjölner, the hammer. It is all in the end of Völuspa, ie the poetic edda that Dottie has posted a link to.

The mother of the Norns? I dont think so. I think the only survivors are Módi and Magni and Vídarr and Váli. Balder and Höder are resurrected and two humans also survive.
@Frogus: Wouldnt it be easy to pick if to choose ninjas would mean death, but to choose babes meant you survived?

A lot is never made clear, which is why I asked. I read both the Prose and Poetic Eddas years ago, but my impression remains that it draws from various sources--folktales, bardic songs, prophecies, parables, etc. Ragnarok in particular has a prophetic flavor, and if I recall correctly, exists in several variants with contradictory details. But I'll have to do more research to confirm this. I suspect a sincere Asatru witch could give us all the details we want, but I'm just a Gardnerian.

Isn't Erda just the "queen of death and shadows" in the Germanic version of the myth, as portrayed in continental versions of the myth and more famously in Wagner's The Nibelungen Ring et all? I have been rooting through Våluspå and Edda for 2 hours now, and I can't find any mention of her anywhere, however she features prominently as "Mother Earth" in Rheingold and Gøtterdammerung.
And do you think the English language need for ending all Norse names with an "i" comes from the fact that the original version ends with an "e" as in Mode, Magne, Snorre, Våle, Loke, etc and it's a spelling problem?
