Maybe I'm just really stupid and missing something easy, but HOW do I get to other areas from Santa Monica, like Downtown or Holllywood........?
That depends.
After you blow up the Sabbat warehouse, a taxi will appear on the street in front of the Asylum. Speak with the cab driver and you can travel downtown. Areas open up sequentially after certain quests are completed: Santa Monica--Downtown--Hollywood--Chinatown.
If you are playing a Nosferatu, you will not be able to use the taxi (in fact, it will not appear at all). Bertram will give you a sewer guide after you blow up the Sabat Warehouse. After which you can head down to the sewers and "use" the city map you find there to travel to areas exactly as others use the cab.
