Hit'n'run
Hit'n'run
I've been playin IWD1 and got up to dragons eye. my fav. character was my rogue. he was soooooooooo kl. he would hide in the shadow, sneak into the enemy, and take them out one by one by running out of site and hiding again to sneak back in. wud this tactic work in IWD2? i'm considering getting all my characters to work towards this style of guerilla fighting. Backstabbing just does soo much damage. but wud it work?
I'm currently soloing with a fighter/thief and backstabbing and hiding works really well so far. Without useful spells like haste or the boots of speed it can be kinda tricky, but the hit and run has gotten me through to the Kuldahar rather quickly. I'm not sure whether or not I can defeat the Guardian in the Jungles of Chult, but I'm sure as heck gonna try!

Sneak attack in IWD2 works about the same as Backstab in IWD1 (although it should be better, as it should be effective when 2 characers flank one opponent, but it is not implemented due to technical reasons).
Getting a group like that would work, in most situations, since spell casters and such can be taken down easily. You'd be facing some problems when facing scripted scenarios where you are forced to talk before a battle, or when facing creatures immune to the extra damage. Note that it only works when attacking from the back of the target, and that hiding in front of any hostile creature is impossible, as I know. I do not think that it is entirely unworkable, but you'd have a case of performance that is at both ends of "ease of battle" with little, if any, fights falling in between.

Invisibility potions and items can circumvent the necessity of being visible for scripted encounters, though. I have my own hit and run tactic of running an archer back and forth, stopping to take a shot now and again. Often the enemy gets too close if I don't have boots of speed, so dropping an invisibility gives me a chance to get away and restart the process.
Lloth's Sting is a great weapon for backstabbing. If you use its Web ability (33% chance) then every attack you make on the character that's webbed is considered a sneak attack. If you have a good THAC0 then you can slaughter almost anything. Hence the reason for my Fighter/Thief soloing.
Oh man. THAC0. What a complicated system THAT was, compared to the new one.
They all confuse me. I just play. I'm not so good on remembering all the rules and how they work. Takes too much time away from smashing skulls or splitting stomachs open.

Actually, THAC0 and the current Attack vs Armor Class is only two sides of the same coin. While the Atk vs AC pits the Atk roll vs the opponents AC on which is higher, the THAC0 simply subtracts the AC from the Atk before making the d20 roll. Hence, you have higher AC is better in 3e and lower AC is better in 2e.

Argh. They just have to make it difficult. Yeah, it makes sense, though.

I know how they work. It's just conceptually easier to work with all positive numbers. And the thac0 combined with the saving throw system and proficiency check system and everything else combined to make it that much more confusing. The new system is far more uniform and understandable.
In my opinion.
In my opinion.
And I wholeheartedly agree.
Little wonder about the geek tags they had last time.. you need to be a wizard as much to fathom the rules logically, tho I must admit that it was nice rolling against a small number range than adding numbers that can total into the mid 2-digit range..![Big Grin :D](./images/smilies/)

If a little digression leads to expanding knowledge, why not participate? It's too hard to start a new thread for every little question that'll take two seconds, b/c the person you want to answer the question may never see it and if they don't want to answer it and someone else has a better idea, a PM doesn't work either. Enough digression for now, though. Has anyone else chosen a good weapon for backstabbing that helps eradicate your opponent faster by disabling them in some way?

It would depend on the enemy, really. That web-casting sword is always nice, but I seem to recall there being a short sword that could silence people. Maybe it was a dagger. I don't know. But that'd help against spellcasters.
In general though, when I backstab spellcasters, they tend to die, so secondary effects aren't really necessary.
Against non-spellcasters, I still sneak attack just for damage, because really, with all the rogue feats and such that complement sneak attacks, I don't need to worry too much about weapon effects.
I also like to use the tactic of dropping a fireball or something on a rogue with evasion.
