I think the forum was just opened for the game. Anyway, it's a 2000 PCRPG in the vein of the Wizardry series (actually done by one of the developers of that series). It's very old school in feel.

The official website is still up -

http://games.activision.com/games/wizards/

And, this site has a lot of screenshots (by the developer, I believe) -

Pretty low considering the age of the game. I believe its - Pentium 233, 64MB RAM, DX 7.0.

Would anyone know where to buy this game? I looked online for it and couldn't find it at the stores I know of. Not even ebay had a copy.

eBay has copies occasionally ... I persevered and eventually found one, which should arrive today or tomorrow. Same time as Dungeon Lords and the Episode III game for the Nintendo DS, so it might be a while before I play ...

When I checked eBay this morning there were a few listings (most in England), and on Amazon there were a couple in the 'zshops'.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Maybe I'll try next month, I already blew my budget on other things this month when I couldn't find it. :(

Mine actually came this morning ... I forgot that the one I had bought included the strategy guide! (Bonus!)

I installed (very slow, for no good reason) and played a bit. Looks like it will be some fun ... certainly enough to justify $5!

Well, I ordered one, 13.50 total to be shipped to me from england. I love the older games personally. The newer ones are all graphics and no real substance sadly. So, I'd rather pay the 15 bucks for an old game than the 50 for a new game. :D

I would recommend Wizards & Warriors to anybody that liked the last few Wizardry titles or the early Might & Magic titles. It's a good game that "feels" like it could have been a classic if not for the many bugs that plague it and the somewhat hard-to-follow storyline.

If you're running Windows XP with DirectX 8.0 or higher, you may have some problems with it. I actually installed a Windows 98 machine with DirectX 7.0 just so I could play it the way the game was meant to be played at release. It's slow going, but I'm currently writing a walkthrough for it and will have a site dedicated to the game on GameBanshee within the next month or so. For a sneak peek, click here :) . The walkthrough is still a work in progress, so pay no attention to it for now.

*sighs* So I'll have problems with it because of my OS. Well....isn't there a function in XP to let you load individual programs as an older version of windows? Maybe that would fix it.

Unfortunately, putting the shortcut in Windows 95 compatability mode doesn't work either - at least on my Windows XP SP2 setup. I found a procedure for recompiling the game's AVI files somewhere on the web that was supposed to help make Windows XP compatible, but that didn't work either. You may have more luck than me, but if all else fails you may have to dual-boot your system or use an older machine.

Oh that sucks. Then again, I didn't update with the service packs for the exact reason that I was told it would mess with older games. So maybe it will work better for me. Hopefully it works, otherwise I'll have to reformat and back-up everything.

Thanks for the heads-up. :)

I'm running it on an XP SP2 system with Direct X 9.0c - the one I've played HL2, etc on ... without any issues ... so I guess it is another one of those variable things.

Wizards and Warriors

I have had this game for many years. This old game doesn`t have good graphics though.I think i have started it 4 times and i end up in a dead end every time. You just can`t see all the things that come when you kill someone...People walk randomly to places and you can kill them freely. They say all the same things over and over...you can even screw up your game right from the start without even noticing it at first.

On the other hand, playing it can still be fun.I liked the charecters that you can create, especially the huge variety of races and class that you can become.Don`t like the elephant though..There are different guilds that your charecters can join.

Well,it still is a good game and i think that it is better than Wizardry.

Well, after a mix-up with it being sent to me with two copies of the same disc, manufacturer's fault, and waiting for the new copy with both disc's needed to play it I finally got the new copy today. I threw it in, installed it and it crashed my system. I played with it, crashed my system, switched it around, and crashed my system. It's going to go to collecting dust in the basement now.

i haven't found any big problems running this game in windows xp except that there are a couple of avi files which are used for the towns. i think you might be able to get through it anyway, if you install one of those all in one codec packs. check free-codecs.com

anyway, the game was very fun for me and i really liked the character development.

download Virtual Dub and recompile ALL the avi's. i made copies of the originals first and moved them into a separate folder, just in case. then put the recompiled ones where the originals were. works great. this also allows you to access all the shops in town. without it, i couldn't get into the magic shops until i was halfway thru the game.

patch it, too, with the unofficial patch. i never had problems with it, but make a copy of your savegame files first, in case something goes awry.

Hi ya all, I recently bought this game also and love RPG's of this kind...definately install the unofficial patch and do the AVI file fix as I found that I couldn't click on all the buildings in the towns. One thing though I have just run into and am hoping someone will have a simple solution bar starting the game again. I am up to exploring the serpent temple and just realised that I am missing the heretic key that Kol was supposed to give me. However he didn't and he wont seem to appear again outside the temple so I can chat him to try and get it off him. Is this one of those dead ends I've read about? Is there an easy way to do a hex edit on my save game and give myself that key? I've tried the editors but they don't do items.

Please let me know if you have any idea's? My only other idea is to start again and just copy over my roster.dat file so I can atleast still use my built up characters from the beginning..
