Game crashes a lot

Post by Krusader »

Almost 6 out of 10 times I activate the enhanced vision the game crashes (computer freezes, have to press the reboot button). This also happens when I activate the scope for the sniper rifle or sometimes when trying to fire a rifle-like weapon.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas? I already have installed the latest patches for my sound card (Audigy 2), my video card (Radeon 9600Pro), and the last patch for the game.

Running on a Pentium 4 @ 2.66 with 512 MB of RAM.

TIA

I had the same problem with Fable. I was using GeForce5200 on Pentium IV 2.8 Ghz with 1024 mb Ram so it should be working just fine, well it was not, to my great disappointment. I solved it partialy by instaling many different ForceWares, finally one version did the trick. Maybe you should do the same, with you Radeon.

By the way, is this game playworthy, or should I avoid it?

I've experienced this very same problem on quite a number of games, particularly Titan Quest (demo), Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Hitman: Blood Money to name a few. Basically, what I did is to lower the sound acceleration at the DxDiag menu. Really worked for me when playing those games with crash problems. However, this solution may work on most computers but not all.

Another tip is to try to change the compatibility mode to Windows 98 or something. It may or may not work. Hope these tips help. :)

The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

LOL, a year and a half later.

I got to finish the game by just not using the scopes on weapons. That did the trick. It was reported somewhere that this game had issues with drivers, which I think it was the case in this situation. ATi has several problems with its drivers and games, and it's not really fixing them. Case in point, NWN; you have to disable the water effects if you have an ATi card. This bug was reported years ago and neither Bioware nor ATi have fixed it, they just keep throwing the responsibility for that at each other. Another game that has issues with ATi is Thief 3, apparently. Enough to make me decide not to buy an ATi card again, and now that they were bought out by AMD... anyway, that's a different problem.

Thanks for getting to answer to this thread.

PS: Kruszakus, the game is ok. If you played and loved the original Deus Ex, you may like it. But don't expect the same long and in-depth playing experience. DE2 is finished in about 15 hours. Honestly, if it had not been for the crashes and the stupid inventory system, I would have ofund it more enjoyable.
