Inexperienced?

Post by Uber Mensch »

Inexperienced question about XP. Read somewhere that you pick up more XP by playing solo - I followed that advice through chaps 1-3, killed all baddies, completed all side quests, found items for henchmen etc. Now starting chap.4 (as a wizard) and am only at level 16. Running out of time? Have I missed something? Do you get more XP for fighting alongside henchmen & using familiars? Any advice welcome. Thanks,

If memory serves, I don't believe there is an experience difference either way. Meaning, I don't think henchmen take your experience. Likewise, I am sure familiars don't.

But, yeah, you're about at the right amount of experience for the beginning of chapter 4. I think I was around 17 or 18 when I completed the game.

When fighting with "extras", you'll be treated as if you were 1 level higher per extra in regards of XP
So if you are a Level 4 fighting with familiar and henchmen it will treat you as level 6 when giving you your XP per kill. It is apparently how NwN has implemented the Challenge Rating from the ruleset.
Thus - henchmen and familiar doesn't actually take away your XP, they simply increase the challenge rating you have and thus less XP is awarded when you overcome the challenges (fights)

However, this "difference" is naturally higher at the start of the game where there is huge difference between a level 3 and level 4s XP gain in view of killing a monster, compared to near the end where there is less of a difference between a level 13 and a level 15 when killing a monster (relative speaking of course). Combined with this that you spend "more time" on higher level because you level faster when low level, it should be deductable that the difference in total XP is not that big when running withouth henchmen/familiar.
Of couse, if you run with familiar/companion/henchmen and summoned creature (to take an example) - it would be more visible, then if you just ran with one henchmen.

I seem to recall, that if playing "legit" withouth henchmen et al, you can end up near the end of the game with 1-2 extra levels as compared to if you use a henchmen and occasional familiar/Summons (my experiences at least).
And seeing as I most of the time ended up near L16 "normally and around 17/18 when soloing mostly - I'd say you are right on track.

After a patch a long time ago, you can't get L20 in NwN with just playing normally.

It is absolutely true that playing solo makes you earn more exp. I usually play that way because of that.

You have a few options the way I see it.
1. Wreak havoc on everything you see, leave nothing alive, wipe all life from Ch4, and see where that gets you.
2. Load you character somewhere else to get some exp.
3. Finish the game before lvl 20, you can still use the char elsewhere!
4. debug it.
