How do you get rid of the X over the charms slots on items?

In Beyond Divinity how do you get rid of the X's over the charm slots

You get rid of the X's by learning the Enchanting skill. For every level of skill in Enchanting, an X vanishes, freeing up one holder to contain a charm of your choice. Note that once you've put a charm in place, you can't remove it.

In Beyond Divinity they got rid of the enchanting skill. You should be able to insert charms at any time.

Are you sure the object in question allows charms? The object description should tell you how many charms you can put in it, if any.
