Weapons ratings

Post by Noel »

Can someone give me a quick idea of how weapons are rated, ie, is a 1D4 better than a 1D8, 2d4 etc?

I think 1D4 means one dice +4, and something like 2D4 would mean role 2 dice +4. Im not sure which one is better though.

In Baldur's Gate, all 'd' letters between numbers means dice. The number before the 'd' gives how often you roll the dice, and the number after the 'd' says how many sides this specific dice does have.

There is a long post regarding every detail about this below, search for "Damage" in the headline of the posts.

A quick aside, people tend to get hung up on damage numbers. High damage is great, of course, but if you can't hit an enemy, who cares what the damage is (...that is to say, none).

The thac0 bonus of a weapon is a much better indicator of its power.

The 'D' is die. So a 1d4 would be a 4-sided dice rolled. All calculations are randomly generated numbers based on the type of dice employed. So a 1d4+3 sword for example, if you hit, the program will generate a number between 1 and 4 and then add on 3 after for damage. It's a good way to figure the minimum and maximum damage of your weapons when you want to choose. 1d4 weapon would have a minimum of 2 damage and a max of 4, you get the idea.

Weapon Speed, the lower the number the better.

Thac0 is your ability to hit an enemy at AC 0. The computer randomly generates a number between 1 and always 20. It's a 1d20 roll. The weapon thac0 is subtracted from your base thac0, even tho you see a + for it, and whatever the program rolls it needs to be higher than that final number to hit an enemy of AC 0.
