Weapons ratings
Can someone give me a quick idea of how weapons are rated, ie, is a 1D4 better than a 1D8, 2d4 etc?

In Baldur's Gate, all 'd' letters between numbers means dice. The number before the 'd' gives how often you roll the dice, and the number after the 'd' says how many sides this specific dice does have.

The 'D' is die. So a 1d4 would be a 4-sided dice rolled. All calculations are randomly generated numbers based on the type of dice employed. So a 1d4+3 sword for example, if you hit, the program will generate a number between 1 and 4 and then add on 3 after for damage. It's a good way to figure the minimum and maximum damage of your weapons when you want to choose. 1d4 weapon would have a minimum of 2 damage and a max of 4, you get the idea.
Weapon Speed, the lower the number the better.
Thac0 is your ability to hit an enemy at AC 0. The computer randomly generates a number between 1 and always 20. It's a 1d20 roll. The weapon thac0 is subtracted from your base thac0, even tho you see a + for it, and whatever the program rolls it needs to be higher than that final number to hit an enemy of AC 0.
