...if you can kill Valygar at earliest possible convinience and still get the mage stronghold? Since in the GB quests section it says that "....after you've completed the Valygar NPC-specific quests...." indicating that Valygar would still be alive, but I play evil and I'd quite like to kill him. (';..;')

No problems. All you need to do is get access to the sphere and Valygar can help you with that dead or alive.
