...a Halflings! It's so cute watching them as they jump for somebody's throat and jump again and again...this is meant by 'higher goals'.

I happen to have a handy little spreadsheet and it reveals.. Halfling, on stats 160 vs Elf-135 (total of all starting abilities at 19 Dex not including hear noise, climb wall, read languages), Gnome is next-105 with Half-Elf being the worst at 80 (but 19 Dex is not available/included). Elves of course get +1 with longsword but you cannay backstab with a long sword... - Curdis

I better reply.
this is about races now,right.
halfling - the best thief race.they are small, they look inocent and people forget that size does not matter(you girlfriend may disagree about this),besides on halfing sociaty getting stuff from others (especialy from the "Tall people") and not asking permision is a very long tradicion.
Elves - yes, there are thiefs on elven sociaty and sometimes they are usefull, but the 19 dex and thievering skills come more from the way they fisical are.
Half-elves- they are sometimes the scorn of the society either human our elven so they resort to the "less" legal activitys.
Dwarf - Dwarven society is very rigid, so thieves are a someout rarity but there are always some exepcions driven by the dwarven lust for gold.
Gnomes-the same as halflings but they go for magic more so there are few "pure" thieves but a lot of the "ilusinist-thief" around.
Human-Is there some dificuly for figure out why.

You can backstab with longswords. Half Orcs are pretty good and have kickin' backstabs with their 19 Str. maximum! My favorite is the halfling, though.

IMHO Humans are best. There is so much skill-enhancing equipment and potions in the game coupled with rapid level-ups that you can dual class a human thief very early on.

Rail, that you can backstab with longswords or katanas is a bug (o.k. might be 3rd rules but I doubt). As you know backstabbing originally is only for shortswords and daggers.
Plain Thieves are a waste, always try to dual or multi with fighter or mage. Thief/Cleric is also nice but I hate Gnomes. Halflings are cute anyway...

I'm not sure its a bug or if its in 3rd ed. rules. It seems to be a leftover from BG1. Since 'large swords' encompassed long, bastard and 2-handed swords, thieves could be proficient in this class but use only the longsword (and backstab with it). A F/T, like coran, could use bastards and 2-handers but could not backstab with them.

Must've left the longsword backstab in BG2 (if indeed, it should be left out).

Plain thieves are a waste?!? How can you say that? They're awesome to play. I have been told, though I don't have 3rd ed. rules, any 1-h thief weapon can backstab, including clubs. The backstab is supposed to be a crippling surprise blow from behind. A club to the base of the skull or a knife in the ribs both constitute as a backstab. Whereas this may be true in the 3rd Ed. rules (someone fill me in), I don't know about BG@, exactly. I haven't tried backstabbing with a club in the game, though it would sure help out cleric/thieves, but I know the longsword works, and it should!

In BG, only daggers, shortswords and longswords backstab.

I actually never thought about that - how do cleric/thief do a backstab?

I need a thief in my party (for traps). Does anyone know where Nalia and the other thief (sells turnips can't remember his name) go if at first you tell them you don't need them. I left Nalia outside the keep but there's no one there now. I left the turnip salesman (I think he was a gnome?) in the Gov't District. He's not there anymore either. Thanks.

Jan (turnipman) goes to his home outside the copper coronet in the slums district. Nalia will stay where you leave her or go back to the copper coronet.
