gems

it may be just because im not playing with the right characters or something that i am not catching but i cant seem to figure out what the gems are for other than to sell... if there is another use for them i would be grateful to have someone tell me what it is.

Sell, sell and sell. Gems are just there to add a bit of difference, rather than just picking up coins, you can pick up gems to sell for coins.

I always sold them all. I wonder if they can be used with Alchemy or something...?

Some gems are quest related. That's not very often, though, so if you pick up a bunch of them of the same type, chances are that you can sell them for the money. I know you need a few diamonds somewhere early, but I think those are the only required gems in the whole game. Welcome to the forums and good luck!

There's another kind of gem needed for a later quest, but enough of those are available on the same map.

Yeah, that's the aforementioned diamond.

In Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal they have included a use for diamonds, as they can be used to help make new items. Unfortunately, there is no use for diamonds here.

No, you need four or five other gems in another area of the game to open a door. That's enough said, however. And they are plentiful on that map.
