Pop-up ads
Pop-up ads
Is it just me or does anybody else in here have problems with certain popup ads freezing up your GB browser? It happens more with the Atari popups and now the Verizon popups. I have to close and reload GB almost everytime one of those ads popup.

I get that too actually. Just a blank screen. Sometimes reloading the page will fix it, other times I have to completely close out and then start a new browser.

I use firefox, and really never have popups of any kind. Occasionally I'll end up with just a string of code on a grey screen, but livejournal.com does that too so I think that's just random error's of some sort.
I have noticed that occasionally, the font will randomly change when I'm posting. Not for what I'm typing, but the whole site overall. That confuses me. I'm not sure if that's me hitting some combination of keys and having my hand slip onto the control key and making that happen, or just random occurance.

I once had a little teaparty, this afternoon at three, twas was very small, three guests in all; I, myself, and me. myself ate up the sandwhiches, while i drank up the tea. twas also i that ate the pie,and passed the cake to me
Right, advertisements are necessary to help pay for the site, but can't something be done so that the ads aren't affecting the functionality of the site? For example: the problems I'm having aren't that they're just annoying but rather that Atari ad tends to completely freeze up my browser causing me to have to open a new one and sign back in. very annoying.

The pop-up ads don't bother me much... What bothers me however is the ads you can't mute.

I make it so I stay logged in on my computer, saved the password and username and it does so automatically for me. Perhaps that would solve that problem for you? When I use another computer, I end up with a starting ad that says it opens once every 24 hours, I don't get that anymore on mine since I left it with the automatic sign in.

Yeah, I guess if I'm going to have to keep coming back in every time that ad pops up, I should probably just save that security info. At least I won't have to sign in every time it happens then.

Just to add.
I am getting this Batman Returns ad in every single page I see in forums today, even the "reply to thread" page.
I am happy to accept the needs of ad if it keeps this great site going, but every page I turn is bit too much!

cant they use on-screen adds insted of popups? I'm getting rather annoyed of clicking the batman thingy away all the time, especially since I click faster than the add appears, so I always click on the add

Well - they could... but one needs to understand and accept how the Internet works and especially seen in the light of the history of Internet.
With the amount of pop-up blocking and add-blocking which exists, naturally advsertisment companies will be more agressive in their advertising. It is the same with television, magazines and all sort others.
There are even pop-over advertisment which prevents you from navigating a site until you've pressed "close" or something - truely annoying, but "unfortunally" it is a natural development of Internet.
The only current alternative to supporting a website of larger magnitute is pay-to-use which goes against the "free-to-use" history and expectation of the web.
So where an add.company could use less "intrusive" and annoying advertisments, most people/browsers automatically block these, then it is logical that they'll use more intrusive one. But now we see automatically pop-up killers in almost all applications (browsers, firewalls and what not), I'm affraid we'll see a movement towards others even more intrusive advertisment.
It is how the Internet works. Pay to use or live with adds. Sites are expensive and advertisment revenue is not very high anymore - like it was in the golden dotCom days.
