X-COM was awesome. A new installation in the series would, too, be awesome - I might even go back into gaming if this is true. I'm too tired to do any research now, but I'll remember to check it out tomorrow.
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

Careful! Remember, what made the series so great was a development team working in the 1990s as part of Microprose. Microprose is gone, the original developers are gone, and whoever takes on X-COM now--assuming anybody does--would be using a popular brand name to sell a completely different product.

I actually emailed Sid Meyer on this, and I got this back as a reply from... *rummaging through his inbox* oh, the Firaxis^ webmaster, saying this in general.
Q) I'm looking for an old game (Covert Action | Pirates | Silent Service | etc) of Sid's...

A) Infogrames now owns the rights to almost all of Sid's older games,
and as such, we have no authority to do anything with them. Your best bet is to search the web, and/or check Ebay (http://www.ebay.com).
You might also check out the Used Game Trading Zone (http://www.ugtz.com).
Didn't Infrogames kick the bucket anyways?

Besides, from I've heard the last couple of X-COM games (particularly from them) sucked pretty bad. If 'Pirates!' was picked up by Firaxis (for development, at least), I'd only see a bit of rigamarole costing up to at least a couple million in the way. Not colossal, but still something to keep in mind.

Note: ^ = Sid Meyer's new gaming company after Microprose

...as anyone who's ever played X-COM: Enforcer will tell you. I just don't want think about that game ever again. Fable got it spot on - it has been turned into a name to stick on a mediocre product to give sales a kick.

Ahh, yes, I remember that from a while back! *snaps finger* So that's why Atari was involved w/ "Pirates!'...

Well, from what I hear, Atari's reeling from game disappointments, mostly from *with a mornful look* The Temple of Elemental Evil. :(
