assassins and bounty hunters

Post by Ned Flanders »

Just curious if anyone out there has played these two kits (assassins and bounty hunters) with any success. It just seems to me the poison ability is a little overrated and I've never done much with setting traps although after reading several other posts they do seem to have their uses. I tried these two classes and decided if I was going to play this class I'd rather be a straight theif or a swashbuckler. Am I missing something with these other two kits.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

traps are amazing. i got a dragon from uninjured to injured with two. also they to shoot arrows out from a good distance away so you dont have to worry about where they walk exactly.

i belive assasins get 1 more backstab multiplyer than others (7)

High level Assassins are pretty deadly. The hardest part about playing one are the restrictions to thieving skills you get when you level up. Since you can't waste even a single point, the Assassin can only master 4 of the 7 thieving categories. However, in Throne of Bhaal you'll be able to advance 17 more levels, or 255 more skill points. This should be enough to make the Assassin a good all-around thief.
The Assassins poison skill is handy in the fact that you can use it on any weapon. Want to disrupt a mage that's across the screen before he can cast? Just poison some arrows. Also, once you hit Level 21 the Assassin's backstab becomes x7 - instant mage slaying.
I'm not a fan of the Bounty Hunter, but between the Swashbuckler or the Assassin it depends entirely on your playing style. Do you want a super-thief with a really low AC and good dual-wield attack, but no backstabbing? Go with the Swashbuckler. Or would you prefer the ultimate backstabber, excellent mage disrupter, and adequate thief?
Then it's the Assassin.
One final thought. If you want a combination of both, why not try a fighter dualled over to thief at Level 9? That way you can still hit Level 22 as a thief (tons of points and x5 backstabbing) but still enjoy all the hit points, weapon specialization and bonuses of the fighter. I would have said Kensai/Thief but that negates any of the cool thief armours.
Just my two cents,

I had a blast playing assassin, and don't worry about the thief skills, just buy the mercykiller ring. I played with an elven assassin, 23 strenght (from the belt and for one of the tears of bhaal) 19 dexterity and 17 constitution, rest I can't remember. With thief you should only put points in 4 thief skills, that's hide in shadow, find traps, set traps and pick locks, for pickpocketing, use master thief potions. Because I am an elf I get bonus in long sword, comes in really handy when I get the blackrazor. I used two weapons. Celestial fury in off hand, blackrazor in main hand and daystar in a slot so I can use sunray, sure kills vampires. And for helmet I use that king something every class can use, can't remember what necklace I use, maybe that thing that protects you from psionics. Rings, the mercykiller ring, than ring of air (gives improved invisibility) and I switch to either ring of free action when someone is throwing hold spells or such at me or ring of regeneration when I sleep. For boots, ofcourse I have boots of speed. My armor be the mighty scales of a shadow dragon, along with my gauntlets of weapon skill. Lets not forget, robe of non detection, invaluable for a thief, fear me mages for thy will not stand a chance.

In my oppinion, assassin and bountyhunter are the best and funniest classes to play with, booooyah!

Here's my worth five cents (or less).

I started this character a few days ago, just to see how it goes.

I be a human female assasin, dualclassing to Fighter at 20th level(?) when I get the x7 multiplier, which is the absolute maximum I suppose.

With the exp. cap on ToB set to 8 million, I'll still get ~ 6 million exp in my fighter levels making me a ~35 level fighter spiced with amazing backstabbing abilities. So I'm a one man (or actually, girl) backstabbin' killing machine. But hence I don't know what the abilities in ToB will be, I can't be sure.

Minus sides are of course, that I can't waste any thieving points to any other than essential abilities making me a less than mid-range thief for lockpicking etc. etc.

.IMO.
Dualclassed characters rock! If there would be no exp. point cap or racial limitations, I'd always bet on the multiclassed char's.
