The Druid

Post by Caxen »

I have just begun playing BG1 (Sorry, wrong forum maybe.)
And Im a plain druid. After finnishing BG1 I will continue with my character in BG2. Is druid a good or bad choice of class? Does a druid add anything at all for the party survival?

My druid:
Level: 1
Name: Alecsander
Class: Druid
Race: Human

Stats
STR: 15
DEX: 15
CON: 14
INT: 12
WIS: 17
CHA: 18

Have I chosen good attributes?
Is Druid a good class?
Do druids learn shapeshift in BG1?
Anyone ever finnsihed BG1 and 2 with a Druid PC?
Did I say druid?
I'm a super-mage ffs! :D

Druid skills

Playing a druid should be reasonable in BGI. You get access to a few animal shapeshifts as well as divine spells- although not as many as healing spells as a cleric. You shouldn't really need Charisma at 18, there are items that can enhance it for you.
Otherwise it depends if you want your druid to be on the frontline or not, If you want your druid to be a competent fighter too, you should increase your strength and definitely your constitution from 14. Adding a couple more points in this attribute could be the diffence from life and death (not to be overly dramatic :) ) .
You will also be limited to druidic weapons such as clubs, slings, staffs and later scimitars which aren't the best of weapons.

I don't really care for druids but they are more playable in BG2 than they were in BG1. The most important improvement is the 5th level spell Insect Plague. It stops spell casters from casting for several rounds and will do damage to everyone in the area that doesn't save. Also Iron Skins which is parallel to the mage spell Stoneskin.

What Ravager says about weapons is very true, but there are some druid-specific items that kind of make up for it (in an I-don't-really-care-but-to-each-his-own kind of way).

I would have allocated the attributes differently, but you should probably not worry about that kind of thing. I would drop CHA to 15 (which is the minimum for a druid, I think) and drop INT to 9. After maxing out WIS, redistribute the points to CON, DEX and STR in that order if you are going to concentrate on missile weapons (recommended) or CON, STR & DEX if you are going for melee. Since you won't be a fighter CON shouldn't go higher than 16. That should leave you with 3 points to divide up between STR and DEX. My recommendation would then be: 15 STR, 18 DEX, 16 CON, 9 INT, 18 WIS, 15 CHA. But there are many people who would say that your original number are a fine opportunity to role-play, so it's no big deal, really.
