Sometimes you just get fortunate like that. Try doing it without losing anybody, though. That can be a problem sometimes. Keeping everybody alive and such.

Final battle - spoilers

I agree with Erenor.

I remember the last time I finished the game, that I took down the golems quickly and managed to kill Belhifet without losing anyone whereas other times I have had real problems thanks to him focusing on a weak character, activating traps or falling victim to his spells (he had flame strike didn't he  )

Addition: I think it also depends on the type of chracters you have: fight or spell heavy and the items you have accumulated

Winning

I have completed the game three times so far. Didn't lose anyone in any run through, but it was hardest the first time because the party was at a more modest level with the IWD 1 XP cap in effect. The second time was after doing HOW and the third time was after I had loaded and completed the other expansion Trials of the Luremaster as well as HOW. The party was at a higher level and so naturally had less problem.
One interesting difference is that on the third run through with TotL loaded the final fight is buffed up with **spoiler** a pair of Cornugon from TotL who "can" be tough customers. but still came through without much damage. Lower resistence spells are helpful in making him vulnerable to magic. keeping the party spread out helps minimize the effect of the flame strike. On the first run through, if one of the melee fighters got knocked down a bit I sent them to the cleric for a heal spell while the others kept the pressure on Beh. The Third time through my Paladin was able to just about about take him out singlehanded while the others took out the Golems and the 2 Cornugon.

Did you mean "Insane"

Hi Ravager,

This is Icewind Dale 1 and doesn't have a HOF mode like IWD 2. Did you mean to ask if I had it on the hardest setting, "Insane"? If so, then the answer would be no. it was on hard or normal for the various games. I suppose I should do "Insane" for next my foray. Frankly, I forgot about upping that as I went through my last playing of the game.

Heart of Fury Mode

The Heart of Winter expansion pack adds a Heart of Fury mode. In fact I just began a game with a party that completed the game. As in IWDII it seriously increases monster difficulty (Goblins are now worth over 2000XP :D ).
It can be turned on through the configuration program and is worth trying if only to see how tough grunt goblins and orcs can be :) .

Did you face 2 iron golems AND 2 cornugons. Wow! :) I didn't even know that Cornugons were included in IWD 1.

If you don't have HOW you should get it, if only to see the Trials of the Luremaster expansion!

Learn something knew every day!

Well,

I will have to check the H of F mode for IWD 1 out, sounds interesting. Thanks, I do have HOW (see my post on this thread from 6 July). You have to have it to do TotL.

My third run through of IWD 1 was a complete one with both expansions (HOW and TotL) loaded as well. You are right, Cornugons aren't part of the normal IWD 1 game, BUT, they are added (to the final fight at least) if TotL is also loaded. On this run through I didn't load TotL until I was near the end of HOW. So I don't know if it would have changed or added any monsters to IWD (other than the final fight which it definitely did).

To do all three scenarios as one game, you have to do them in the following order. Start IWD, at some point (preferably 9th level or higher which for a party of 6 is around Upper Dorn) switch and begin HOW. Do NOT finish HOW but you can at any point speak to the halfling (forgot his name) in the Gallows Inn and he will take your party to do TotL. TotL requires some pretty tough characters to complete so I would wait till you are getting close to finishing HOW. Once you start TotL you cannot return until you finish. So finish TotL, go back and finish HOW, then go and finish regular IWD. By this point my party was around 21st to 23rd level and Poquelin was easy. My Paladin almost took him out single-handedly.

HOF in IWD1

How id you get back to IWD1 areas? I have always killed Poquelin and THEN gone over to HOW areas. Is it something to do with asking the barbarian shaman to take you to the new areas before you are finished?

HOF mode also adds items form HOW as well as other items that may not be in a normal game of either. As you start with at least some of the gold you had from before, you will be in abetter position to buy high-level items from Conlan and Orrick. :)

I thought only Glabrezu were added by TotL expansion, not Cornugon (those are normally in PS:T and BGII: TOB).

HOF is proving an interesting challenge. I'm up to halfway through Kresselack's tomb in the Vale of Shadows and normal skeletons are surprisingly tough. :) Especially considering my characters don't have great profiency(sp?) with crushing weaponry. Spoiler follows: Myrkul's Sending (the big shadow) was especially tough due to his immunity tocrushing and piercing weapons. I only found out later that he wasn't immune to piercing weapons. :p .

My party varied from level 12 to 15 (around 120000 EXP I think) when I started.

Good luck if you decide to try HOF as well. I think it's worth it from what I have seen. Most monsters are tougher and some encounters have more monsters or more higher level enemies. :)

Don't finish the regular IWD 1 first

Sorry if my previous post was confusing. You don't have to finish the basic IWD game first. You can do that of course and then start a HOW (and include TotL) game. But to face Behlifet/Poquelin with higher level party, Follow this course:
Start IWD 1 and do that game up to somewhere around Upper Dorn (characters should be around 9th or 10th by this time) or later. You can choose to switch over whenever you like, but you HAVE to do it before confronting Poquelin in the cave above the temple in Lower Dorn.

Next go back to Kuhldahar and you do indeed visit the shaman who is staying in the the little single cabin (the one that sticks out of hillside, not the one standing by the bridge) that's between the Tavern and the Temple of Ilmater.
This will get you going on HOW and still leave IWD unfinished. Don't worry, when you finish HOW you will get taken back to Kuhldahar.

You can (and probably should) do as much of HOW as possible without finishing it. You can do most of it but you have switch to TotL at some point BEFORE going to Icasaracht's Isle. Go into the Whispering Gallows Inn/Tavern and talk to a halfling named Hobart Stubbletoes. He will offer (and badger you if you decline) to take you on a great adventure. This will get you started in TotL. You have finish TotL once started.

After you finish TotL, you will be returned to the Gallows Inn and you can then go and finish HOW.

When you finish HOW, you will see the final movie for it and then be returned to either inside or outside the little cabin in Kuhldahar. From there you can pick up IWD and finish it.

So the order in short is:
Start IWD
Start HOW
Start TotL
Finish TotL
Finish HOW
Finish IWD

The Cornugon are indeed in TotL as well as the Glabrezu. They "can" appear in one particular location but don't unless certain things happen. They were very nasty by the way. Haven't made it far enough into BG2 to see how they might compare there. If you do TotL before finishing IWD a pair of them should appear in the final fight with Behlifet (at least they did for me). Don't know how the HOF mode may affect this.

I just defeated the Verbeeg at the end of Chapter 1. They are tough normally, but they are even tougher for a level 13-15 party in HOF. I had to summon earth and fire elementals as well as anyhting else I could manage just to survive their hits and several characters died anyway :( . I wouldn't be surprised if enemies from HOW appear in IWD1. I am surprised that the game used the resources from the TotL 'patch' in IWD1. Maybe it'll happen for me too.

I might try HOW before finishing IWD1 to see how that is. The final IWD1 battle may end up at BGII:TOB standards! I dread facing beholders later in the game, they are bad enough in the normal mode without BGII protections. :)

HOF Mode

I shudder to think at what some of the TotL monsters would be like in HOF mode. The Spectral Guards for example are already 100+ hit points, have an AC that must be in the upper negatives, and attack 3 or 4 times per round with a skill level that must be near F15 or 16. I seem to remember that they may be exceptional fast as well, so they can swarm you in a hurry. I hate them as it is now.

Can't agree more! :)

My characters seem to be advancing slower than I had expected in XP. Most of them have only gone up 1 level by the end of Chap. 1 despite each enemy being at least 2000+ XP. :(

Yxumonei is going to be a real challenge, although I suppose it may be better with higher level weapons and better Thaco bonuses.
