help with chests

Hi, I'm new to Dungeon Lords, so please bare with me. I have trouble opening any trapped chest. I have upgraded to patch 1.3, but still experience the same problems.
The manual says to look at the bottom icons, and when the corrisponding top one(s) turn gold, click on the top ones (I think i understoodthat right!!), but what ever i do, the trap is set off and I have to retry again. At disarm level 4, I have 99% chance of openning a level 2 chest. in reality the chances are 0% for me!!. What am i doing wrong.
The same problem appears if I bash the chests as well. the trap goes off and I am hurt. I have a strength of 20

You don't click on the top ones. You click on the bottom symbol once the red/golden stripe reaches the corresponding one at the top.

Alsom correct me if I'm wrong, but I think with 1.3 in place, you actually have to click the currently highlighted icon too. You can't just click something in the bottom row, you have to click one of the specific 3 or 4 icons down there. This is where inspect comes in handy, 'cos you can plan you method of attack, and if you don't like the setup, you just 'leave', and start over.

With this method, I could easily get chests 1 or 2 levels above my skills w/o picks and w/o problems, and even get chests I had a 1 or 2 % chance of picking. The problem was once my strength got to 30 or 40, it was easier and quicker just to bash. with a 70 strength, I bash lvl 9 chests at 54%, and I don't think it's gone up since 55 or 60 str.

In order to open Chests you must
1) look at the bottom icons (Theres normally 1 to 4 depedning on the level of the chest)
2) these icons are the icons that must be pressed to open the chest
3) Look at the darker bar, locate the icons you must press so you know where they are
4) click on "Disarm" the darker bar should now light up
5) When the Red bar is on one of the required Icons in the bar click the matching bottom icon

To make things easier, raise your theif skills and also cast time control to slow down the speed of the bar.

This is proberly hard to understand - im not good at explaing things... i;ll show you a really bad diagram - it may help

Longer row: 12345678

Bottom: 352

When the red bar starts to fill number 2 on the longer row of numbers, you must press number 2 on the bottom row. then number 3.. then let the red bar pass over number four and then click number 5
