Possible Spoilers

Imoen and Nalia can no longer level up as thieves as they are dual classed thief/mages, as opposed to multi-class like Jan.

Of the three Nalia makes the weakest thief, relying more heavily on skill enhancing items, but becomes the stronger mage

Jan makes the better thief as he will continue to level up as a thief, and has a number of unique skill enhancing items, but will level up more slowly as a mage as a result.

Imoen (if you can resist the temptation to smash her head with something large and heavy every time she opens her oversized mouth  ) makes a perfectly adequate theif with spellcasting abilities that surpass Jan's but are slightly weaker than Nalia's.

Lots of people generally like to take Imoen because of her involvement in the main story arc (using either Jan, Nalia or Yoshimo until she is rescued)

Or if you really can't choose make your PC some sort of thief based character .

Mortal, try placing your questions in separate threads, and focus them down. Also, check out the walkthrough on GameBanshee. :)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Viconia won't romance Elves because she's a Drow, and the Drow are prejudiced against Elves. If you play a half-elf, you can romance her, and your character will still look like Elf, at least. Half-elves are also able to play more classes than Elves, so that is another advantage.

Jan is the best Thief in the game because, as you say, the other Thieves in the game cannot level up like he can. He also has personal items that improve his skills, and his Mage spells come in handy. If Jan is in your party, you should also consider Minsc.

Even though Imoen plays a role in the main story, she doesn't have much dialogue after you rescue her, so she's not as interesting as some of the other NPCs.

So, if you have Viconia, Minsc, and Jan in your party, that's a pretty good start. A Mage and another melee character (Stalker, Berserker, Inquisitor, Fighter/Cleric, etc.) would round out your party rather nicely, so you could play, say, a Conjurer and recruit Valygar, Mazzy, Korgan, Keldorn, or Anomen; or you could play, say, a Berserker or a Barbarian and recruit Edwin, Nalia, or Imoen.

You shouldn't spend too much time worrying about which armor and weapons are the best. I always end up with far more equipment than I can use, and my party is very well-equipped no matter which items I decide to use.
I don't really know if I were to solo the whole game or get a party
Although quite a few people like to solo, I think it's wise - and the most fun - to play with a party, at least ifit's the first time you play this game. BG may not be the most difficult game in the world, to succesfully solo you really have to have experience with the game.
Also, interactions and dialogues with your partymembers are IMHO some of the nicest aspects of BG2.
