Maintaining your character

I have made many characters amd i keep encountering an annoying problem with not being able to load my character. i will show the example.
i just created a new char named fin in multiplayer , then i play with fin to level 5 and i save game and exit .

now i want to play with fin again and i press load char to get fin lvl 5 but the only thing i find is fin lvl 1

How do i load my char so that he has the right number of levels instead of having 1 level ?

i am aware that i can just load game and take my char that way but if i dont get the above thing to work i will have to start a new char each time i start on a new adventure or single player

So please help me on the question
